ARE YOU TOO OLD (or your kids too young) for the typical trick-or-treating and haunted house Halloween shenanigans? Maybe you want a little less ghoul and a lot more fall? Check out the following alternatives for family-friendly fun.
AutumnFest at Callaway Gardens: The highlight of Callaway Gardens' annual AutumnFest is in Mr. Cason's Vegetable Garden, where families can navigate corn and hay mazes, listen to the music of the Dulcimer Troupers, make scarecrows and pine cone bird feeders, paint pumpkins and view antique tractors as well as heirloom plants and seeds.
• THE 411: Prices vary. Weekends through Nov. 5, 9 a.m. Callaway Gardens, 5887 Ga. 18/354, Pine Mountain. 1-800-225-5292 (800-CALLAWAY), www.callawayonline.com.
Conyers FallFest: The fifth annual Conyers FallFest grew enough to move under the covered arena at the Georgia International Horse Park. Your money gets you rides and attractions such as a Ferris wheel, moon walk, rock climbing wall and merry-go-round; games including skee ball, inflatable joust, fast pitch and bobbing for apples; live music; plus clowns, balloons, free candy for kids and face painting.
• THE 411: $5; under 2 free. Oct. 31, 5-9 p.m. Georgia International Horse Park, 1996 Centennial Olympic Parkway, Conyers. 770-922-5334, www.conyersfallfest.com.
Halloween Hayrides & Haunts: Held outdoors near the Wills Park Recreation Center, this three-hour Halloween celebration will feature storytellers spinning their favorite ghostly yarns and fun hayrides through the park every 15 minutes. There will also be games and other activities for children, who are encouraged to come in their favorite spooky or silly costume.
• THE 411: Free. Oct. 28, 3 p.m. Wills Park, 11925 Wills Road, Alpharetta. 678-297-6130, www.alpharetta.ga.us.
Scarecrows in the Garden: Now in its fifth year, this exhibit features more than 70 scarecrows created by metro area businesses, organizations, individuals and designers. From the whimsical and bizarre to the creepy and even frightful, the entries will be judged by a panel, who will look for originality and use of materials. Bring a flashlight for eerie after-dark exploration.
• THE 411: $12; $9 seniors; $7 students; free under age 3. Through Oct. 31. 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesdays-Sundays; 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Thursdays. Atlanta Botanical Garden, 1345 Piedmont Ave. N.E., Atlanta. 404-876-5859, www.atlantabotanicalgarden.org.
Uncle Shuck's Corn Maze: With four miles of trails that form the shape of a race car and two checkered flags, and six checkpoints in each maze to give you a sense of accomplishment, even the directionally challenged will have fun getting lost in this 12-acre labyrinth. Afterward, you can take target practice on the corn cannon or go on an old-fashioned hayride that, at night, includes a bonfire and marshmallow roast. Also at night through Oct. 31 and for an extra $2, Uncle Shuck's turns into a haunted maze, with all manner of spooks and specters frightening visitors.
• THE 411: $9; ages 60 and up/ages 12 and under $8; under age 3 free. Through Nov. 19. October: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sundays-Thursdays; 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays. November: 4-10 p.m. Fridays; 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturdays; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sundays. Ga. 53, two miles west of Ga. 400, Dawsonville. 770-772-6223, www.uncleshucks.com.
