We’re not pointing “green” thumbs, but if you’ve ever found yourself admiring those tall weeds in your yard (because they’re the only thing growing), check out tonight’s “Design Ideas to Convert Eyesores into Beauty Spots.” The “trowel-challenged” can get some practical advice and encouragement from landscape architect and consultant Bruce Holliday, who presents a talk about making the most of whatever hand nature has dealt your yard. Part of the 2008 gardening series. 7-8:30 p.m. Aug. 26. $7. Dekalb County Extension, 4380 Memorial Drive, Decatur. 404-298-4080, www.co.dekalb.ga.us/extension.

The sun sets a bit earlier now and that means you’re more likely to see critters of the night during the “Walk On The Wild Side” night hike at Panola Mountain State Park in Stockbridge. Naturalist Brian Bentley leads the hikes starting at 7:30 p.m., using a battery-powered black light to illuminate insects and lichen. Centipedes and scorpions glow red and green under the violet light. Lichen glows white, gold and purple.

The fee is $5, plus the $3 state park parking fee. To register, call 770-389-7801.

The night hikes continue on Thursday nights throughout the year.

Instead of fighting the morning traffic crunch, stroll through the Acworth Farmers Market. The morning market brings up to a dozen vendors to this small town in northwest Cobb County. Fresh fruits, vegetable and bedding plants are for sale from 7 a.m. to about 11 a.m. Bring some fresh corn to the office and the boss won’t mind that you’re a bit late. The market — set up in a parking lot at Main Street and Lemon Street — runs through Oct. 24. For more information, call Acworth City Hall at 770-974-8813. — Clint Williams

How’s this for a late-summer swim? The pools outside President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Little White House in Warm Springs are usually empty, for preservation purposes. (Roosevelt built the house in 1932, and used the pools as polio therapy.) Today and Monday, they’ll be filled with naturally warm spring water for swim lessons. Reservations are recommended, but not required. 10 a.m.-5:30 Aug. 31-Sept. 1. $15 for adults, $10 ages 6 to 17. For more information, call 706-655-5870 or visit gastateparks.org/info/littlewhite. — Jamie Gumbrecht

Long white canes and pitch black rooms: The ingredients of the exhibition “Dialog in the Dark” seem simple. The experience promises something illuminating, though, as a blind or visually impaired guide leads sighted participants through spaces in which no one can see. 9 a.m.-8 p.m. daily (last ticket sold at 7 p.m.). Aug. 30-March 1. $24; $20 ages 65 and older and military personnel; $16 ages 11 and younger. Atlantic Station Exhibition Center, 265 18th St., Atlanta. 1-866-866-8265, www.dialogtickets.com.
