Ooh, what’s that scent you’re wearing? It smells like … space.
Get ready for “Star Trek” cologne, three new fragrances which will boldly go on sale next month from a company called Genki Wear, in advance of the new “Star Trek” movie due May 8.
Trek fans hearing the news have set phasers on sarcasm.
“Are you kidding me?” says Eric Watts of Doraville, president of U.S.S. Republic, the largest Trek fan club in the Southeast. “I can’t imagine Capt. Kirk getting up in the morning and dabbing a little cologne behind his ears so he can smell good on the bridge.”
The upcoming movie, directed by J.J. Abrams (“Lost”), has fans excited, and that means more new merchandise for sale.
“Anything you can think to put ‘Star Trek’ on, it’s been done,” says Herb McCaulla, who runs Starbase Atlanta, an Internet sci-fi and comics memorabilia retailer. “There’s been underwear, men’s ties, pens, candy, cookies…”
McCaulla thinks collectors will buy the scents “just ‘cause they’re collectible. Other people may buy it as a novelty or a gag gift.”
And some may dab a little on for the next Dragon*Con in downtown Atlanta. “Conventions have always been a good place for people to hook up,” McCaulla notes.
Genki will sell three frangrances. For men, there’s Tiberius (Kirk’s middle name) and Red Shirt (an inside joke about crew members in red shirts always dying). For women there’s Pon Farr, the name of a Vulcan mating ritual.
The colognes will retail for $30.
“For how much?” cracks Watts. “A gallon?”
