Oprah’s Summer Vacation

Girlfriend’s back!

Oprah returned for a new season Monday, and seriously, if we didn’t all love and admire her so much (hey, Serfy needs a new pair of shoes…or a yacht), we’d kind of have to despise her. She’s like that kid in grade school who always volunteered to write a report on the hardest topic, like “Our Wonderful Solar System,” so the rest of us wouldn’t have to. And then she’d go and turn it in early. With yarn binding together the construction paper cover upon which she’d hand-drawn a perfectly to-scale picture of Saturn, complete with the right number of rings, color-coordinated to match the yarn.

The title of Monday’s show was “Oprah & Gayle’s Big Adventure.” But they might as well have called it “What I Did On My Summer Vacation by A-Plus, Plus, Plus Student Oprah Winfrey.” Here’s what we saw: Oprah and her BFF Gayle King starting out on a 11-day driving trip across America in a red Chevrolet Impala. I don’t know why anyone says American Automaking has lost its mojo, since it appears that the Impala now comes standard with two or three in-dashboard cameras, a makeup artist and a professional lighting studio. Oprah never said as much, but we know it must be true, because while she and Gayle bickered a lot over where they were going, when to stop for food and who got to work the radio, they looked FABULOUS the whole time they were doing it!

She promised to give the car to somebody when they’ve finished showing us this whole “Big Adventure” thing, which, presumably will be many, many ratings-swollen weeks from now. But the studio audience did get a consolation prize: Homemade root beer shipped in direct from Mr. D’z Route 66 Diner in Kingman, Arizona, where the duo had stopped on Day 2. I know what you’re thinking: What if they have to pay taxes on it, like the “Oprah” audience that all got cars a few seasons ago? Here’s what I’m thinking: How much can a root beer possibly cost in Kingman, Arizona?

Meanwhile, as if all that wasn’t bad enough in a “Hey, did you see her construction paper cover?” sort of way, the last 15 minutes of the show featured Oprah in Hawaii. Along with 400 of her Harpo employees and over 600 of their nearest and dearest. That’s a total of 1,065 American Airlines tickets we saw her marching up to the ticket counter to buy and then — presumably after she had sailed through security without having to turn in her lipstick and bottled Snapple, thank you very much! — entertaining them all for a week at some fabulous resort on Maui. She even greeted them all on the tarmac and personally draped leis around their necks! Meanwhile, the Serf can’t even get the Evil Overlord (aka her editor) to stop torturing her with reminders that only six days remain before she has to start watching that incomprehensible new show, “Heroes” on NBC.

Sigh. Oprah, next time you’re taking a trip, call me. I promise to be your BFF. But even more important, I promise to let you work the radio the whole time.

Who gives a *!? Why is it that we (America) are SO fascinated by these peoples’ lives? I could care less about them driving down the damn street and pumping frigging gas. WE DO THAT EVERYDAY!!!

I don’t care what anyone says about Oprah….she is a good person and I believe the reason she is so successful is because she shares her wealth!

Her Chevy Impala was actually shipped on a cargo carrier jet that followed her Learjet as she stopped at various places across America. Totally like the President and his limo. They would unload it and they’d film scenes for a minute, before taking off again. Don’t let her fool you. :)

I clicked on to say WHO CARES !! Oprah is nothing, she hasn’t cured a medical disease. Yes she has made a ton of money by talking over and interupting guests for too many years.

No I didn’t read the article, just wanted to weigh in on the who cares side.

Oprah…….I wannnnnnnnnnnnnnnaaaaaaaaaaaa be your best friend forever and if not that can I pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeee! be one of your employees. I, too believe that Oprah is so successful because she gives from the heart. And if I, where in her position my best friend would be right there beside me to. It’s rumored that when Oprah became a millionaire she said that she wanted her BBF to be one to and she made it happen. You go girl! and may the Good Lord continue to Bless you and yours! I ain’t mad girl!!

By Yvette

September 19, 2006 12:20 PM | Link to this

All of the snide “who cares” remarks are sure signs of jealousy and just plain ol’ hate! Get over it, there are more of us(Oprahphobes)than there are of you and we are happy she’s back for another season. I wish my employer would just say “thank-you” sometimes (aside from the bi-weekly check) but an all expense paid vacation to Hawaii would be just as good!

Oprah Haters, ever wander why your lives aren’t just as fabulous as hers? Try getting rid of the cynicism, it’s a start.

OK Y’ALL, COME ON!!! Why are you talking about what she has and has not done? Or what she has and you don’t have? I thought this blog was about her road adventure with her best friend. For those that don’t give a s?#t…then cool and it’s just your individual opinion. For those that care and want to talk about her adventure…then talk on and share your thoughts. Oprah has fans and non-fans like any other celebrity. It’s either you love her or you hate her. But truly who cares about what the non-fans think. Why would non-fans respond to this blog other than to cause discourse throughout the blog for the real fans. So everyone needs to calm down and stop being so serious and political about things that were intended to be fun. It not that serious guys.

Yes, I too believe that when you’ve been blessed, pass it on (Patti Labelle)!!!

No, this news does not “drive” our lives.

And YES, I do believe that if she looked more like some of these HATERS, they would not be HATING SO HARD on this sista’s success!!!!!!!

By Sarah

Love her or hate her, she must be doing something right, look at her sucess. I’d rather see something in the press about Oprah any day of the week than read another Paris Hilton or Lyndsey (did I spell it right) Lohan story, those two I am totally over. The only part about Oprah I would change if I could, is that she had never and promoted met Dr. Phil. I am tired of him and that stupid little gimic of getting his wife from the audience each day and walking off after the taping. I mean come on, who takes teir wife to work every day? And oh yes, I would love the car.

No matter what Oprah and Gayle venture was, a trip or whatever she called it; was actually not made to be personally. If so, you did not need all of the cameras, makeup artists, etc. What I want to know is, why two women go accross America together and tell the public about it. We often have really not given stars their privacy…and this is one of those reason…a person does this where the entire world can see, and yet, she needs all of the body guards, extra people yet, publicize her trip accross america with a counterpart. Yes, it might have really excited some or most of her viewing people, but what it does is…not set her apart from the fact that she needs to be traveling with a handisome gentlemen (per sey) that make this trip worth filming and conversing about!

I did not read the article. I am not hating. I have no problem with people and their success. I just can’t get with the people who think she is some type of god or something. The only reason I know about the gas thing is I was watching MNF (Monday Night Football) and was flipping during a commercial break and saw Oprah and Gail/Gayle(?). And yes, rwh, if I were her, I’d have preferred to travel with a HUNK!!!! Best friends are ok, but a HUNK is a HUNK is a HUNK!!!! (need I say more!!)

Another 1000 Amens to Sirena!

When I see this on the top of the AJC website, I am amazed that this newspaper thinks that they have any credibility to report REAL news. JC-you are correct.

Oprah never went on that trip. Faked all the way. Her car was shipped in for the shots. Come on people. I have heard from the ‘restaurant owners’ who have said she left the establishment in a black SUV. I ask where is the Chevrolet?

September 19, 2006 1:16 PM | Link to this

It was a trip well planned. To all that loved watchingthe vacation good for you. For the haters it’s ok. It’s your opinion. Negative energy consumes you. Get with life, live life to your fullest(I know she is, and you see it everyday on her show). You know sometime people want to share their life with others. That’s to let them know it’s not always about work. And I think that’s just what she did. Enjoy and be a happy camper. I don’t watch Oprah much, but it’s ok she’s living her dream. Maybe it’s time to tap into yours. BE HAPPY!!! I promise life will get better.

To all of you conspiracy theorists out there who are willing to believe anything, if you watched thw show yesterday, she was in the SUV while they were in Vegas. Seems to me, when she and Gayle were stopping to take in the sights, they rode with the production team so they could tape. It’s her show and if she wants to talk about her vacation she can. No different from Bill O’Reilly, and the lot! If you dont want to see it or read about it, there are two things you can do, just turn off the T.V. or don’t click on the link. Just that simple…….

“Producer all-star Jack Mori wonders how he’ll make it through 3,600 miles with his team in an RV. Soon, the crew discovered they couldn’t keep up with Oprah and Gayle on the highway, and had to switch to an SUV!”

I thought it was so funny how Oprah wanted peace and quiet and Gayle was singing all of those sappy songs. When she satyed in the car to hear the rest of that Celine Dion song I laughed really hard because I’ve been there. Like Oprah, I have a lot of hang ups about driving too. Gayle seems like such a likeable easy going person. It was nice seeing how opposites attract.

This show of Oprah goes from Vegas to NYC in 11 days reminds me of a time when I used to cross country with my Grandfather.

But I have to put up with some music that I didnt like at the time but I truly enjoyed now. The blues and jazz.

Plus it was nice to see that America is still the beautiful.

Oprah is like the King Midas.. anything she promotes will do $$$$$

I bet the Wynn’s got booked solid until the year 2010 just because she said the bed was the best she ever slept in!!!!

And now celebrities do appericate the VIP treatment… lol welcome to our world Oprah….

I wonder if she is going to sell the adventure on a dvd because I would love to see it…

and poor Gayle and Oprah have to bicker over the radio.

Great way to start the season!

To just plain tired,

Have a wonderful best friend. His name is Jesus Christ. Hope you get to heaven, and by that comment you made probably won’t. Please don’t come back and tell me where you really went.

I’m glad she went on an American vacation to see America. Too many people go outside America without first seeing America for their vacations. I would like to visit all 50 states and find why people live there, what they like about it, and what there is to do there. So far I have been to almost half. We went oyt west and it was truely aewsome! Just too bad she is traveling so fawst! She went 400 miles the first day and stayewd in Las Vegas. She missed a lot og good things to do and see along the way. Well, I guess it isn’t the travel channel, but I do think she is promoting American tourism. Too bad she didn’t do this at the begining of summer!

@Judi—oh well, Gayle is not on the show that much so I think she did get the hint.

@babygirl-I guess since Jesus Christ is in your back pocket he told you to tell me that I probably wont go to heaven. So Christian of you.

Oprah’s Back From Vacation … So F*cking What … Who Cares …

My Grandmother Just Died … How about that ?

And I also forgot to put in the fact that you want to judge Oprah and Gayle relationship when I know the Good Book said to leave that to God.

But you go head on with your Christian self.

I haven’t read the comments yet, but responded to the remark written that Oprah gave away several cars some months ago. Did anyone really, really, expect Oprah to foot the bills for
taxes payable on the cars as well??

HGTV gives away a fabulous house costing millions each year, do they pay taxes due on the property? Certainly not, the result is most of the people who win promptly sell the homes and buy something more affordable or use the money otherwise!

Oprah is not a saint, but she certainly has done a lot more than many men in the US with more or just as much money as she has. Point to mention, she doesn’t have to do it!

@Anna You are talking to some brick walls in here today.

I can not “knock” a giving person but you know how people are who live in glass houses - they love to throw stones.

I personally say everyone including myself need to look at how much we give to another person related or not related to us.

Oprah is just following the Good Book counsel that “there is more happiness in giving than in receiving.”

I think the trip was a great idea. I’m not hating at all. I have several best friends and we have taken many trips together. What is the big deal we are as close or closer than sisters. It is a wonderful thing to have truly great friends in your life. And in Gayles defense…she had a very successful career in news broadcasting working as an evening news anchor for many years in CT.

What was the point in writing this article? Apparently you didn’t enjoy the show and thought you needed to write something to help those who oppose her to agree with you. But for the record there are those of us who will always admire OPRAH no matter what she does. Oprah is a FABULOUS human being. Try covering stories that are a little more important than what Oprah does on vacation and on her. I wish I could earn a salary as a journalist writing junk.

I absolutely love Oprah. She is a positive, paid, powerful, prosperous BLACK WOMAN!! She has haters just like everyone else. She is an example of overcoming adversity, she makes you think, she shows emotion and passion. If it was Katie Curic(sp?) taking a trip around America “some of you” wouldn’t have a problem with it. I know it’s hard for some of you to see a BLACK WOMAN successful and doing well for herself but get over it. You all aren’t the only ones getting paid and making a difference.

And another thing, “some people” always want to see women fighting and being mean towards each other and here you have two women who have a loving friendship and they are labeled as being lesbians. Why can’t “some people” just accept the fact that black folks can get along with one another, we can build each other up, we can encourage one another, we can sustain long term freindships…

And who gives a flying rats tail if Oprah’s ratings drop when Gayles on the show. SHE”S RICH BYCH, ain’t nothing happening to her # 1 spot. She’s always going to be on top. Then ya’ll can see if Ellen Degeneres can take her place. Yeah Right

I thought Oprah & Gayle were a hoot on the first show. Can’t wait to catch the next one. Oprah does so many good things for strangers and now she’s helping me by sharing her Boot Camp program. Maybe one day I can go on her show and show off my end results.

If Oprah really gave away to people who need, she would give me $30,000 to pay off all my debts. Oh, well. I don’t hate her because of what she has. I would love to have just a small part of it.

By Just plain tired

Yes, I agree, it would be nice to be included in the generosity at least once. How about the Christmas show she does each year….I’d love to be in the audience for that one!!!!

But even if I’m never on the receiving end, I would NOT sit back and be jealous or envious or hateful……that’ll just cause me to block my blessings.

All of you that worship Oprah as a God really crack me up, especially the folks that say she has so many haters because of the way she looks (i.e. race). If you remember, Oprah went to a very affluent store after they had closed and claimed they wouldn’t let her in because she was black. Quick and easy excuse.

Like many others, I do not care about what Oprah does or doesn’t do. I do not fall into the category of celebrity worshipper and in fact couldn’t care less about the reality shows today. Maybe that explains why are society as a whole is “dumbing” down.

Too bad Okra & her gurfrieend didnt just keep driving forever. Im sure their journey in life will inspire many other black females, but no one could ever again manipulate the system to her own success as Okra has done. Thank goodness for cable tv & satellite systems so we dont have to watch all the crap on network tv that is crammed down our throats the last few years. Big brother, Dancing with the stars, Okra & all the other junk. When can we start signing up for & only paying for the channels we really want to watch?

Like, love or worship whomever you want too, but your’re seriously lacking in gray matter if you compare Oprah with Bill Gates. First off, Oprah is nowhere in the same league as Bill Gates when it comes to personal wealth; gates could buy Oprahs wealth twenty- five times and still be a billionaire. Gates is an inventor, his impact has changed the world; Oprah is a celebrity, like Paris Hilton. Also, Gates’ ego does not dictate that he wear fake hair and have his body image alterted for a photo shoot, but Paris Hilton does. She has made her money off of clingy, needy women who suffer from an idol worship syndrome. Now all you go buy a ticket and the winner can tell Ms. O in 10,000 words or less exactly how wonderful she is. Yawn.

wow! look at all of the attention that “o” has generated, once again. she’s the master of entertainment, which is why she is sooooo wealthy. who is that’s falling for her “anthropoligical antics?” look at her audience, what do you see? what are the demographics?
