Take the mic at the Shrine of the Black Madonna bookstore for "Wordlife Wednesdays," a showcase of poetry, storytelling and spoken word. Performers can sign up from 7-8 p.m. and be admitted for free. The event is hosted by poet Plain Brown and includes live music. Check it out every first Wednesday of the month. $5 general admission. With more than 4,600 seats and a big, big, big movie screen, the Fox Theatre is a special place to view films. Arrive before 7:30 p.m. for the Rolling Stones concert documentary "Shine a Light," the kick-off feature for this year's Coca-Cola Summer Film Series. The event includes a special performance by keyboardist Chuck Leavell. As series tradition insists, Larry Douglas Embury will play a concert on the "Mighty Mo" Möller organ and there'll be a sing-a-long and classic cartoon. $7. 660 Peachtree St. N.E. www.foxtheatre.org.

Browse the booths at the Virginia-Highland Summerfest, which has one of the city's best artists' markets. The juried market features work and exhibits from more than 220 artists from around the Southeast working in glass, jewelry, painting, photography, clay and other media. Indie Craft Experience isn't just an art festival, or a collection of glittered-popsicle-stick-gluers peddling their wares. The seventh Indie Craft Experience draws local and national crafters of the indie, ironic, alternative, handmade, do-it-yourself, do-it-pretty, do-it-funny variety. Cool off with Fernbank Museum's new exhibit, "Ends of the Earth: From Polar Bears to Penguins." Follow with the museum's latest IMAX offering, a big-screen tour of the mysterious, icy expanse that is "Antarctica." Noon-5 p.m. today and through Jan. 2, 2009.
