Ancient worlds of Egypt, China come to Atlanta

To celebrate the opening of the exhibit, the High Museum plans “Ni Hao Atlanta!,” a daylong program that’s open to everyone on Sunday. Here’s the schedule:

11:45 a.m.: Performance by the Atlanta Chinese Dance Company.

This is the figure of the Armored General that was excavated in 1976.

Noon: Two “live” warriors ceremonially open the show.

1 p.m.: Shaolin kung fu and tai chi demonstration by Atlanta Area Chinese Shaolin Center for the Martial Arts.

2-4 p.m.: Traditional performances, including erhu (Chinese violin) and guzheng music, a Qin Dynasty Welcome Dance, a Lion Dance and a Fan Dance featuring the Chinese American Cultural Performing Group.

12-5 p.m.: Kids can make their own Chinese warrior out of clay in the Robinson Atrium, Stent Family Wing.

The exhibit runs Nov. 16-April 19. Tickets, timed in half-hour increments: $18; $15, seniors and students with IDS; $11, children 6-17; free for members and children 5 and under. 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays; until 8 p.m. Thursdays; 12-5 p.m. Sundays. Transportation tip: Take MARTA to Arts Center Station. If you drive, there are parking decks at the Woodruff Arts Center and in the surrounding area.

Also at the civic center: “Egypt 3-D: Secrets of the Mummies.” This 22-minute 3-D film follows researchers and explorers as they piece together the archaeological and genetic clues of Egyptian mummies. Every day, every half-hour, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is $5.00.

At Cairo Cafe: Grab a sandwich and take in the photos of contemporary Cairo on the walls. 9 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. (The Cairo Cafe is next to the Pharaoh’s gift shop in the lobby of the Atlanta Civic Center.)

At the Michael C. Carlos Museum of Emory University: “Wonderful Things: The Harry Burton Photographs and the Discovery of the Tomb of Tutankhamun” will really get you in the mood. Burton was the sole photographer to chronicle the discovery and excavation of Tut’s tomb. See review, Tut exhibit.

The Tut exhibit runs Nov. 15-May 25. Timed tickets in half-hour increments: Mondays-Thursdays: $27.50; $24, students/seniors; $16.50, children 6-17. Fridays-Sundays: $32.50, $29.50, students/seniors; $16.50, children 6-17. Free for children 5 and under. Plus: $3.75 per ticket fee and $3.50 per order fee. 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m., daily. Transportation tip: The civic center has paid parking, and it’s four blocks from the civic center MARTA stop.
