Thrillist names two newish Georgia ‘BBQ joints’ as the best in America

There’s yet another set of contenders in the Georgia barbecue battle for the most smokey, finger-licking good, slap-your-mama ribs and brisket.

The tastemakers at Thrillist, a popular lifestyle site,  have christened B’s Cracklin Barbecue, which has spots in Atlanta and Savannah, and ATL’s The Greater Good as the ‘Best BBQ joints in America’.

Editors at the site knew it would be tough to provide an authoritative ranking of just 33 top barbecue spots, so they looked for a “new generation of pitmasters” who bring a crafty edge to the pit but stay true to what makes barbecue great.

Here’s how these two relatively new barbecue joints captured places on the coveted list:

The Greater Good

With less than five years in business, The Greater Good has gone from one Tucker location to three in metro Atlanta. Thrillist praises the unsuspecting barbecue joint, which opened in an old chain restaurant building, for its tender baby back ribs and apppetizers.“...Don't skip the appetizers. If you do, you'll be missing out on liberally rubbed smoked chicken wings and pimento BBQ potato skin,” according to the Thrillist review.

You can smell the smoke from pitmaster Bryan Furman’s  pit whether you’re in Savannah or on Atlanta’s Westside. As Thrillist puts it, the B’s Cracklin’ smoke master “knows pork and not just how to cook it.” Furman grew up on his grandfather’s farm, where they raised hogs and butchered them for special occasions.

“Growing up, my dad cooked chicken and ribs, so I learned that by watching him. My pork and brisket came when I got a smoker, around 2007,” Furman said in an interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Just a few years ago, he brought that homegrown passion for pork to his Savannah location. In 2016, he brought the Carolinia-style fare to Atlanta. Locally and nationally, B’s Cracklin’ tends to get points from diners for its options to dress brisket, ribs and more in a variety of regional sauces. You can get a taste for yourself from Tuesday to Sunday at B’s Cracklin Barbecue Atlanta, 2061 Main St. NW, or its location in Savannah.
