BRANDON STANTON SPEAKS AT GSU
Where: Student Center East Ballroom
When: Sept. 21 at 3 p.m.
Brandon Stanton — a Marietta native, University of Georgia alum and author of the wildly popular Humans of New York blog — is set to speak at Georgia State University on Monday, Sept. 21. The speech is free and open to the public.
Stanton will be speaking as part of the university's Distinguished Speakers Series, which has in the past welcomed guests such as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and actress Laverne Cox to address contemporary issues and share their own stories.
After graduating from UGA, Stanton moved to Chicago and then to New York City in pursuit of a career in bonds trading. In 2010, soon after arriving in New York, he started the photography blog Humans of New York.
Initially began as a project to document the location of 10,000 randomly selected New Yorkers, HONY soon expanded into storytelling, with an emphasis on reflecting the city's diverse population through standlone images and exercepted quotes from interviews.
With more than 6,000 photos and stories, HONY has amassed a large following on social media. As of September 2015, it claimed nearly 15 million Facebook followers and more than 3.8 million Instagram followers.
In recent years, Stanton has taken his blog on the road. Stanton's recent visit to Iran, his second in three years, included a post that resonated with millions, including President Obama. You can read about that here.
