These suits go to work

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

In this economy, reinvention is the key to survival.

The right suit can supercharge your career and your wardrobe.

Once deemed the attire of corporate automatons, suits are staging a comeback. Texture, color and details such as leather trim, flowers and bows can elevate a suit above the ordinary, making it the perfect choice for a day at the office or a night of networking.

A suit is not only a wise investment for that important job interview, it is a wardrobe staple that can be worn again and again. Even if your budget can’t bear a new suit, you can find one that is new to you.

“In tight times, you have to go back to basics to survive,” said Judi Gerhardt, owner of Career Fashion Consignment. “Gently worn designer suits have a longer-term value and cost per wear.”

For Gerhardt, suits have played a key role in her own reinvention. After Hurricane Katrina destroyed her long-standing business in southeast Louisiana, Gerhardt was ready for a change. She decided her next business would focus on the “re-’s”:
resale, recycle and reuse. But Hurricane Gustav had other plans. “When I was boarding everything up [for a second time], I said, ‘I have to get out of here,’ ” she said.

Gerhardt returned to Atlanta after more than 20 years to open her store, which specializes in gently worn professional clothing.

During a recent visit, suits by Akris and Evan Picone hung on the racks, as well as Ann Taylor blouses and sweaters and a men’s coat by Hugo Boss. Prices range from one-third to one-half retail depending on the garment quality and brand, Gerhardt said. Coach bags are under $50, and shoes range from $30 to $50.

Gerhardt, who recently expanded the men’s section in response to customer demand, also offers her clients complimentary styling and interview advice.

What are her tips on dressing for interview success?

1. Know the industry dress code.

2. Be well groomed.

3. Avoid clothing and accessories that are too trendy or elaborate.

4. Accept the fact that you never get a second chance to make a good first impression.
