ATL vs. Dallas
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
When it comes to shopping, Atlanta has often taken a backseat to its southern cousin Dallas (birthplace of Neiman Marcus, thank you). Now it seems the same is true for TV according to today’s Peach Buzz.
An HBO series about high society ladies in Buckhead was replaced by a show with a similar concept based in where? Dallas, of course.
So what’s the deal? What does Dallas have (shopping, society, or otherwise) that Atlanta doesn’t?

I’ve never been to the big D, but just about any place has to be better than downtown ATLANTA…Yes, I was born & raised right here in GA.

The men in Dallas have WAY more money for the useless housewives/golddiggers to spend in Dallas. Think OIL….. Why is this even a topic??
I only go downtown Atlanta once a year for the Macy’s Christmas Parade. That’s it. I certainly do not shop down there or Buckhead. I have the Mall of Georgia in my backyard, why go anywhere else.

Maybe it is because we associate the Big D with J.R. Ewing and the show Dallas. It made the city Dallas seem glamorous and exciting. Personally, I find Houston more enjoyable for shopping and eating out than Dallas. The Galleria in Houston is a great place to shop plus there is an indoor ice skating rink. As far as shopping in Buckhead, the traffic is a big turn off and it is crowded to go from area to area, i.e., shopping at Lenox Square Mall than eating out at the Capital Grill further down the street takes forever to go through the lights then to find parking.

Dallas has the stereotypes, more so than Atlanta, thanks in part to the 80s TV series featuring JR & co. TV producers like stereotypes. Dallas is welcome to the upcoming series about the caveman, as well….
Seriously, Dallas has more generous art collectors, while Atlanta has a stronger theatre community and a better orchestra. And we have hills & trees.
They’re both nice cities, actually.

Who really cares? I doubt that people just fly in from anywhere to Dallas or Atlanta, given my druthers I would choose Seattle.

Never been to Dallas but hear it’s great. Never sure though why so many people who are living in Georgia are so down on Atlanta. Sure, it has it’s problems, as any large city does, but obviously a lot of people find it an enjoyable place to live, otherwise there wouldn’t be the explosion of new condo, etc. Why can’t Dallas AND Atlanta be great cities but in different ways? Don’t be so negative or insecure about your capitol city.

So this is what we have been reduced to? City-wide introspection as to why a lame TV show about a bunch of vapid, rich, useless, fictional women is not being based in Atlanta, but rather Dallas? I say we take it as a compliment.
As for shopping… point me towards Target.

Having lived in Big D 30 of my 40 years, ATL cannot compare. You don’t have the politcal crap, you don’t have the racial conflicts (can’t we all just get along) and we have multiply sports championships. Texans feel 2nd to no one. And all this and money gives the beautiful Texas ladies the confidence the Buckhead Barbies lack.

atlanta is great place to grow up and live your life. sure it has problems what city doesn’t?! During my years as a economics professor at georgia tech, i’ve done multiple comparisons with ATL and other metros, like dallas. Atlanta has the highest number of million plus household incomes and the highest of $1 million Plus homes. ATL has 3 of the 15 five gold star restaurants in the country: dallas has none. In a recent study by the Robb Report Magazine, which specializes in luxury living, buckhead is the most influenceal community in the united states, beating out Bel-Air, Beverlly Hills, and Coral Gables.

i 110% agree with Roy!! I moved from downtown Dallas to downtown Atlanta and ATL is so much better!!!!! There were no nice restaurants or lounges close by, and the nearest danceclub was 11 miles away. Downtown Atlanta is so perfect for mine and many other lifestyles. ATL RULES!!!!

Shopping? This is about shopping?? You all are comparing which city is better based on which has the better shopping??? That in a nutshell expresses 90% of all that is wrong in America today. For anyone who would actually pick a place to live because of the shopping I say: “please pick Dallas (or ANYWHERE ELSE besides Atlanta). We need more thinkers and less shoppers.

Dallas has much better shopping, Northpark, the Galleria, Highland Park Village, West Village and many more boutique stores than Atlanta. Although Atlanta is a great city, I think there is a higher concentration in Dallas.

Craig, surely you confuse Dallas with West Texas. I was in Dallas just yesterday, and I even saw a couple of hills…with not a dust devil in sight. Texas, to be sure, is not (nor will it ever be) Georgia, but it does have a few attractions. Give me time - I’ll think of some. :)

atlanta is just about the best place i’ve lived. I’v lived in Phoenix, Dallas, Philadelphia, and Atlanta. Atlanta is by far the best. ATL has great sport venues, much larger and nicer park space than dallas. MARTA is a much nicer transit system than Dallas will ever have. I lived in Dallas for seven years and not once was a transit stop ever close to my home. There are three stations all with in walking distance of my Midtown condo. Atlanta Rules

i’ve been living in Dallas for 23 years. When i came to Atlanta, i finally noticed what a poor job dallas has done. The parks and recreation center are much nicer in ATL and Atlanta tennis cneter’s are great. the downtown buildings are more visually appealing in Atlanta than Dallas. Mabye my wife and I will move here

Roy’s stats don’t give a real depiction of the two cities. Dallas seems to be much more gaudy than Atlanta. A $1 million home there is twice the size. The restaurant’s may not be as highly rated, but there are more per capita. Dallas is much more about the flash — probably based on it history as a banking and business center. And by the way, the oil money is not in Dallas — that is Fort Worth and Houston.

traveling is my life. i love Europe, Asia and Africa. When i lived i Dallas it was almost impossible to fing a direct flight to Paris,London, or Madrid. it is impossible to find flights to Africa. The main reason i moved to atlanta was because of Hartsfield Jackson. atlanta is one of the transportation and communication capitals of the world. Now i fly to Sydney, Shanghai, Tokyo, Moscow, Seoul, Lagos, and Johannesburg non-stop, all from Atlanta.

I’ve lived in a Dallas Suburb since 1996 and I lived in the Kennesaw area for 16 years before that. Both Metro areas have pros and cons. The Dallas area has much better highway systems and theater and art are better. However the Atlanta area has a better symphony, bbq pork, beautiful hills and trees. Both places have wonderful people, multi cultural areas and unlimited opportunities….and beautiful women!!!

JJ you may not even get this because I forget that we are 3 hours behind you all but anyway, I was born and raised in Seattle and am still here now. When you visit you definitely have to visit Pike Place Market, EMP (experience music project) and the Space Needle. Be sure to take a stroll around the Pier as well, especially if you catch the nice weather. Downtown Seatte has several major department stores and two smaller malls. Pacific Place has the fancy stores like Tiffanys, Barneys and William-Somoma to name a few. The other is Westlake where you can find Footlocker and other less pricey stores. It’s a beautiful city, especially if you enjoy the outdoors because it’s always very green all year round due to the amount of rain we get. People who visit also check out the Microsoft campus and tour Boeings facility. Have fun here!

I’m an Atlanta native who relocated to the DFW area last year because of my job. Since I have been here, I have learned just how spoiled I was in Atlanta. People are much more polite and kind back home. They are also much more down to earth and espouse good southern values. I’m sorry, but no matter what anyone thinks, TX is NOT the south. Sweet Tea isn’t even part of the regular menu here (horror). As for the roads, I’ll take GA any day. At least you guys take care of your roads. I’m waiting for one of these bumps to just shatter my poor little civic apart! And I won’t even get started on the dating life here. My mama raised me that if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all. Well, apparently, they don’t raise their kids that way here. Bottom line is that it’s better in ATL and I would go back in a heartbeat if the right opportunity presented itself!

Yea, Yea, every big city has it’s problems…..but the over abundance of gays and terrible, violent crime in ATL is gaining a foothold. Atlantic Station is turning into Underground ATL but with sunshine. Murders, rapes and bold robberies…….Everyday is is opening day, as in “open the safe and hit the floor” day.

atlanta has a much better luxury scene than dallas. I moved from dallas three months ago and never really fell in love with Texas. I’ve only been here 90 days and i love ATL!!!! the buckhead and midtown areas have stores like Armani, Gucci, St.John, Louis Vuitton, Barneys, and Tiffanys. the music scene is unreal!!!!

I disagree with this mikey guy, he has no idea what he is talking about. the crime rate in Atlanta is one of the fastest decreasing rates in the country, there is one city with one of the fastest growing rate:dallas. Atlantis Station was also named best residential areas for retail, business, living, and dining in the southern United States. i would know all these things. I’m a crime scene investigator with Atlanta PD and my wife is an urban economist

I can see why nick would disagree….both your jobs depend on crime decreasing…….but all you have to do is read the paper, turn on the evening news or travel down to the ATL and tell me you’d walk, even Atlantic station, at night and not worry about getting JACKED UP. Heck, my car was busted into at 3:30pm on a Tuesday on 17th street and P’tree….don’t tell me crime is declining. There are lies, damn lies and statistics….and your POPO chief knows how to manipulate his stats…..IMO

Shopping shouldn’t be the topic of discussion. Quality of life should be. I spent the majority of my 40+ years in ATL and it has declined greatly over the years. Crime on the rise especially in the suburbs, schools overcrowded and declining with trailers needed even at brand new schools, foreclosure rates leading the nation, and traffic so bad you loose about 15-20 hours of your life in a car every week. ATL has grown beyond the great city it once was.

I moved to Atlanta from Dallas TX 3 years ago. I want to go back. There is nothing but pure hate and ignorance in this city. Dallas has class and culture. Atlanta needs to let go of the past and move forward. Bitter hatred towards all will make this city burn again.

Comparing Atlanta to only half of the DFW metroplex is silly. I’m biased of course since I’m a native of Atlanta (born in Dekalb General when it was called that) AND my wife is from West of Fort Worth.
Both places suffer from the same misconceptions that cookie cutter urban life is desirable and more concrete = more better. Souless and hollow. Flashy in places, decrepit in others. Concentrate too many people in too small of a space and you get massive demands for power, water and pavement that have to come from somewhere so you end up like NYC and LA reaching out hundreds of miles away and taking thier resources.

Atlanta beats Dallas in a landslide. Dallas has ATL beat in the school system. But, a better comparison would be ATL vs Houston.

Um, hey “formeratlgirl,” as a Houston native who moved to ATL because of my job, I have to break it to you, but TX is part of the South. Maybe not so much West TX, but most definitely East TX, including H-Town, which is just as Southern as ATL. Towns like Tyler, Longview, Lufkin, Jasper, and Beaumont are just as Deep South as Macon or Columbus. Dallas is much less Southern than Houston, anyway. Houston has Jeff Davis and Robert E. Lee high schools for pete’s sake; even ATL doesn’t have those. In Houston you can get sweet tea, as well as all the Southern food you want. The humidity there also makes ATL look like Phoenix. Besides, if it wasn’t for TX, we wouldn’t have Blue Bell ice cream; what would life be worth without that?

uggghhhh…..dallas has atlanta beat in a landslide….i can think of nothing that atlanta beats dallas in. i personally think both of them has houston beat, but dallas has more billionaires, fortune 500 companines, larger companies, better highway systems, less segregation, better schools, better arts and culture…..atlanta has cnn to publicize its psuedo urban lifestyle.
