Craft Experience

This weekend visit the Indie Craft Experience summertime show in Centennial Olympic Park on Saturday from 11 am to 6 pm.

The event features the designs of young crafters from around the country. In addition, there will be live music and workshops.

If you’re the thrifty type, do some shopping at the citywide clothing swap. Pay $5, get a shopping bag, and fill it with clothes.

Does secondhand make you squeamish or are you all about recycled gear?

Crocs Comeback

amazon.com

Crocs "prima" shoe, $24.95 at amazon.com

So the folks at Crocs, makers of those perforated plastic shoes, have finally acknowledged the aesthetic shortcomings of the popular footwear.

Recent advertisements promoting new styles including flip-flops and ballet slippers use the tagline “More beauty. Less beast.” The rebirth is just in time for what seems to be a revival of the 80’s plastic shoe mania.

But this time, there are designer versions like the $155 flip-flop in translucent green by Marc Jacobs. Or the $80 jeweled ankle strap shoe by Betsey Johnson.

Would you pay $100 for plastic shoes? Is this a trend worth exploring (again!!) or will it only lead to sweaty feet?

Coke is It

Smart Glass Inc.

Coca-Cola can bracelet by Kathleen Plate

If you’re headed for the new World of Coca-Cola this weekend, be sure to give the gift shop more than a cursory look.

The store is filled will goodies from a variety of designers. Reps for Coke say the recycled goods are among the most popular items. That includes jewelry by Atlantan Kathleen Plate.

Plate got her start making jewelry from glass and silver, but friends kept asking for recycled products. One day, on a whim, she dumped her blue bottle of Aveda Brilliant and cut up the glass to make bracelets, necklaces and earrings.

After spotting her creations, Coke called and asked her to do the same using Coke bottles and cans. She complied. Her jewelry costs $35 to $100.

What do you think of the new Coke store? What are the best or worst items for sale?

Moss is growing

topshop.com

Cowl neck dress from Moss' Topshop collection

Atlantans of all ages flocked to Barney’s Co-Op earlier this month for the debut of Kate Moss’ Topshop collection.

Despite what critics in New York think, we here in Atlanta seem to be big fans. The dresses, tops and more sold out almost as soon as they arrived.

Barney’s is now awaiting another shipment. Even Topshop has limits on what you can purchase…only one of any single style, and nor more than 5 items total. Oh, and anyone with a habit of buying and reselling will get restricted.

Did anyone see or score any Moss-wear? What’s the verdict?

Men in Pink

Lilly Pulitzer

Charles Blazer, $595

It takes a real man to rock a pink shirt.

Miller Brothers (3207 Paces Ferry Place) is the exclusive retailer for the new Lilly Pulitzer menswear line. Jackets, shorts, ties and more all feature Pulitzer’s signature pink and green colors or preppy Palm Beach designs (sailboat print pants anyone?).

Pulitzer is the former New York socialite who eloped with Peter Pulitzer (of Pulitzer Prize fame), and settled in Palm Beach to run a juice stand. Her brightly colored shifts (designed to hide juice stains) were a hit in the 60s and 70s.

Popularity waned in the eighties, but the brand was resurrected in 1993. Now they are in expansion mode including accessories and footwear. But back to the guys….

What do you think of this look for men? Should guys engage or leave the pink & green alone?

ATL vs. Dallas

When it comes to shopping, Atlanta has often taken a backseat to its southern cousin Dallas (birthplace of Neiman Marcus, thank you). Now it seems the same is true for TV according to today’s Peach Buzz.

An HBO series about high society ladies in Buckhead was replaced by a show with a similar concept based in where? Dallas, of course.

So what’s the deal? What does Dallas have (shopping, society, or otherwise) that Atlanta doesn’t?

For women, selections include sundresses in graphic prints that hover in the $70 range, while True Religion jeans and a pleated trench dress hit the max price. Men will find hats, hoodies, and jeans (Chip & Pepper for $150), along with a big stock of PF Flyers for $40.

Is That the Gap?

gap.com

Tie shirt by Thakoon, $88 at the Gap

It seems the Gap in Lenox Square has undergone a makeover.

The new nightclub-like ambiance highlights the recently introduced Design Editions, a limited collection of shirts, dresses, etc. inspired by the classic white shirt. The designers for the collection are CFDA winner and runners up, Doo.Ri, Rodarte and Thakoon.

Clearly, the Gap is trying to reposition the brand. This is, after all, the company that recently announced it would close Forth & Towne (the store for grown-up chic), which was open for just a few months here in Atlanta.

What do you think of the Gap Inc. stores (Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy)?

Is the merchandise still on target or totally missing the mark?

Sprechen sie Beauty?

A new cosmetics store has arrived at the Avenue Webb Gin.

Douglas Cosmetics, based in Germany, is Europe’s largest and most prestigious cosmetics and fragrance retailer. There are almost 900 stores across Europe and 13 in the States. Cosmetic and fragrance lines in the store include Ahava, Fracas, La Mer, and more.

It’s kind of a bold move considering the abundance of Sephora and Ulta stores in most markets. And many chains from CVS to Walgreens to Target have started stocking European brands.

So is there really anything that you can’t get here in the States?

What is your favorite cosmetic or fragrance purchase that you simply can’t find locally?
