Sweat Stopper

www.garmentguard.com

Garment Guard underarm shields protect clothing from sweat stains.

It’s summer. It’s hot. That means most of us are schvitzing (and not voluntarily).

For 3 percent of the population, Hyperhydrosis is a serious problem, but one of the things few people talk about.

Sweating can cause any number of fashion dilemmas from ruined shirts to too slippery flip-flops.

The International Hyperhydrosis Society suggests drinking lots of water, wearing loose natural fabrics and breathable shoes.

Or you can try disposable underarm shields by Garment Guard ($10.95) for a pack of 5.

The thin pads adhere to any fabric and prevent even heavy sweaters from sweating through clothes.

What’s your remedy for keeping clothes sweat free?

Singer Gwen Stefani sues Forever 21

Uh-oh. Forever 21 is in trouble again.

This time Gwen Stefani filed a lawsuit alleging that the cheap chic company knocked off designs from her Harajuku Lovers clothing line.

She’s the second designer in recent months (DVF filed a lawsuit in March) to take action against Forever 21 for copyright infringement.

Forever 21 is a pretty popular store in Atlanta, but if this continues, Forever 21 may be forever gone…

What do you think about the continuous allegations against Forever 21?

Fair Trading in Atlanta

wikipedia

The Body Shop in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong

When most people hear “Fair Trade”, they probably think of coffee.

But in recent years, Fair Trade - generally defined as a commitment to equitable partnerships between highly industrialized nations and low-income producers in developing countries - has gained awareness in a variety of product areas.

For-profit companies in apparel, beauty and other industries are all employing fair trade practices. Thirty years ago, companies like Britain based Body Shop (now owned by L’Oreal) was the shining example, now there are established companies right here in Atlanta.

How much do you consider a company’s Fair Trade practices or social consciousness when buying products? Why is it important to you or not?

End of Jane’s Reign

www.janemag.com

After so many rumors it has finally come to pass, executives at Conde Nast announced on Monday that Jane magazine is kaput.

The 10-year-old magazine, which ceases publication with the August issue, was known for its edgy humor and appealed to the kind of twenty-something who made fun of the dating and dieting standards in other women’s magazines.

Still, the magazine’s feminist vibes, didn’t stop staffers from clamoring to empty the fashion closets when they heard the publication was closing, as reported by the New York Post’s Page Six.

Apparently, girls, feminist or not, will be girls.

Is anyone sad to see Jane go? What will you read instead?

Wal-Mart Stonewall

Wal-Mart SuperCenter in the District at Howell Mill

Atlanta residents were excited last fall when Wal-Mart planned its “urban” store location on Howell Mill Road. They were happy to get a Wal-Mart with decent décor and a better mix of merchandise that includes gourmet cheese and an expanded wine section.

But the prospect of a great big Wal-Mart SuperCenter on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, between Chattahoochee Drive and Sugarloaf Parkway, has residents of Duluth up in arms.

One resident suggested Wal-Mart go to Norcross instead. Tomorrow there’s a meeting with Wal-Mart execs to “discuss.”

What’s your vote on Wal-Mart? Is it worth enduring the big, bulky buildings to get cheap goods?

True Religion store, featuring these "Johnny"style jeans for $319, coming soon to Lenox Mall

It’s not quite H&M, but Spanish retailer Zara will make its Atlanta debut at Lenox Square this fall.

Zara, which has locations in Texas and Florida, is known for trendy fashions at affordable prices. The mall also welcomes Lush and several other youth-oriented stores including popular jean purveyors Miss Sixty, True Religion and Diesel.

The new additions mean shoppers will have to kiss stores like Oilily, Waldenbooks and Shaper Image goodbye.

What do you think of the changes underway at Lenox and the new retailers coming in?

On the Cusp

blogonthecusp.com

Opening of Cusp in Georgetown

In an effort to reach out to younger consumers, Neiman Marcus has introduced Cusp, a boutique-like store that is still upscale but more moderately priced. It’s a separate store so the Neiman’s 50+ core shopper won’t feel isolated.

With trendy lines from the likes of Diane Von Furstenberg, Marc Jacobs, and Morphine Generation, Cusp has been compared to Barney’s Co-Op (which we do have at Phipps!).

Two Cusp stores are located in the DC area, one in Los Angeles, and a fourth is scheduled to open in August outside Chicago. No word on a store coming to Atlanta, but what do you think?

Is Neiman’s merchandise too mature and too expensive for the average Generation Y shopper?

Fake Bake takes Dough

jergens.com

Jergens Natural Glow firming Daily Moisturizer builds a gradual fake bake.

Most of the more than 1 million cases of skin cancer diagnosed in the U.S. each year are considered to be sun related according to the American Cancer Society. Even tanning beds can pose problems, say experts.

As a result, many of us have learned to invest in sun protection. But for anyone who can’t face summer with a Gwyneth Paltrow pallor, sunless tanning has been the way to go.

The options range from $7 drugstore brands like Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer to $45 department store brands (Chanel, anyone?).

A number of Atlanta spas offer spray tanning services. Spa Sydell will get you glowing for $40 or $108 for a series of 3 sessions (which will last 30 days).

How much do you spend to keep your fake bake fresh all summer long? What’s your preferred self-tanning product or method?

Shoelanta?

neimanmarcus.com

Tory Burch "Reva" ballet flats at $195 to $225, fall in the price range of the average Atlanta shoe shopper.

On average, Atlanta women spend $202 on a pair of shoes.

That’s almost $100 higher than the national average and more than the amount spent by women in New York and Philadelphia according to a recent survey released by Dr. Scholl’s For Her.

More interesting is the 2% of Atlanta women who say they’ve spent more than $1500 on a single pair of shoes and the 59% who confess to owning more than 11 pairs of shoes.

The one thing the survey didn’t mention is exactly where we are buying all these shoes.

So ladies, how many pairs of shoes do you have? What’s the most you’ve spent on a single pair? And where is your favorite place to buy shoes in Atlanta?
