The Grooming Lounge

grooming_guys_blog_photo.jpg

Men don’t have to do a lot of grooming, but some can’t quite get it right. What are men’s biggest transgressions in grooming? Shaving wrong and having raggedy nails.

This week, the Grooming Lounge (owned by Mike & Pirooz at right), a new men’s barbershop / spa at the Terminus building in Buckhead (3820 Peachtree Road), is prepping for its’ official opening. (It’s open now for appointments, but there are still a few details to tend to.)

Grooming Lounge Atlanta administers everything from the signature $50 hot lather shave in a 6 chair barbershop to a $100 golf massage (treats muscle groups essential to golf swing) in a private treatment room.

Comforts include big screen TVs and complimentary cocktails. And guys can get a professional shoeshine while they wait.

What grooming issues do you think guys need help with the most?

I think the issue men need help with most is the fact that someone will pay $50.00 for a shave.

$20.00? Probably, for the special-ness of it.

$25.00? Maybe … when I feel like treating myself.

But $50.00? Absolutely never.

I work in that building and the place looks beautiful. I’ll certainly give it a try for a haircut and maybe a manicure. Prices are a bit high, but what luxury stuff isn’t now-a-days I guess. Have bough from them online after I saw the sign and pretty good stuff.

$50 for a shave? And someone will pay that? What is this world coming to? The only way I could see paying someone to shave my face (outside of a disrobed super model doing it) would be if it used a process that would eliminate the need for another shave for a month. Completely illogical.

most men have little idea what women pay for beauty services…$50 just barely gets a woman through the door of most salons…

I was in there yesterday and had a great cut. The customer service is out of the world and what guy doesn’t enjoy a cocktail a and little sports center while waiting! A great experience—I definetly recommend giving them a try.

Men need to be informed as to maintain, once they get the service. How to properly shave, style their hair, moisturize, colognes, etc. It is all a part of not only looking better, but feeling better about yourself!

You know what…speaking of haircuts, I hate visiting brand names like Great Clips…they just do not do a good job and the b*ds charge so much! I just wish I could go to an affordable barber, who took some TIME to cut my hair and not as if I were on the belt of some manufacturing plant!

This place is beyond amazing. Their goal is to make you feel like a king while you are there and when you leave. They actually listen to you when you say what you want and take the time to do the job right. Complimentary cocktails while you wait, large screen TVs, an impeccable group that works there makes for the ultimate destination for men who actually want to have the job done right. People it all boils down to you get what you pay for, you talk about wanting to pay less for services, then yes, you can go elsewhere and pay less, however you get less service, less attention and a lower quality end result. If thats what you want then do that. However, if you want the job done right then go to The Grooming Lounge.

Guys, thanks for the feedback. The administrative assistants team I work with has been keeping tabs on the Grooming Salon since we read about it early last year. We need different gift ideas for the guys we support & have really been looking forward to the Salon opening! Our guys work very hard to bring in the profits & we think they deserve a nice treat…especially since some of them really need help with shaving and thier nails.

OMG…women, we know it had to be men that came up with what it means to be feminine so we have to shave this and that, wear make-up, dye hair, get our hair ‘done’, do our nails, etc. and they are supposed to able to leave ‘bushes’ of hair everywhere and they are supposed to be ‘sexy’?! It is just gross! ‘They’ decided it is sexy to rough to the touch and ‘natural’ but we aren’t?! Now this what ‘grooming’ is about. Get rid of that body hair, especially those in those ‘pits’!

LOL @ PurpleOne……….and don’t forget to do those crunches (those who need them). Women want firm abs on their men too!!!

finally!! someone needed to draw attention to this overlooked issue. i hope this fad has teeth. it’s offensive to see hairy backs, hairy nostrils, hairy ears, 4-inch eyebrows, and ugh…those pits!! my greatest fear - working out next to a hairy, sweaty guy!

Hair doesn’t bother me, although my husband isn’t very hair. He just has armpit hair, but that’s fine with me. But I did recently tell him that he needs to keep his hair cut more regularly. Just as I take care of myself, he should also do the same. I’m not into getting my nails done regularly, that’s a treat. But I do have hair appts every 2 weeks and I expect the same of him. Just take care of yourself. My husband would probably never visit a salon like this, but for those who do, it’s a great idea.

Thank you Jesus. Maybe more men will start shaving under their arms now. I can’t stand it when a man uses cream deodarant and he looks as if he has lint balls up under his arms. NASTY!!!!!!

I used to go to a similar place in Duluth before I changed jobs - I’ll definitely be giving this place a try!

And to those of you who wonder what makes a shave worth $50… it DOES last longer than a regular at-home shave, but the entire process is complex, luxurious, and very relaxing.

And there are places that do waxing for men, so yes, you can get rid of a unibrow.

While I’m not likely to spend that much on a shave, I can understand the price. There are so few places that will offer a shave any more. When I could get one years ago, it was one of the MOST relaxing things that I could do as a college student.

It is still Great Clips for me. With their coupons a haircut is $6.99 - $8.99 and I am in and out in no time. And a $50 shave is still not going to last more than a day. I’d rather relax at home on the sofa for free.

Some folks have more money than brains. The news today said Tim McGraw paid $2,000 for a pair of jeans on a recnet shopping trip. At the end of the day his butt smells just as bad beneath those two grand jeans as mine does in my $24.00 Levis.

I know this is off the subject somewhat - I love a well-groomed man, and I understand getting rid of lots of back hair etc, but why do so many men insist on shaving everything now? I can’t stand when a man has hairless forearms or hands, legs or chest. It’s one thing to trim and be neat, but to remove it completely? I know everyone has different tastes, but some of us women, still love what makes a man different from us.

Fifty dollars will help feed and educate my foster child in the Philippines for two months. Spare the shave and save a child!

There is no way I would even pay $20 for a shave. It crazy because by 5:00pm the hairs are already growing back. It can’t be compared to women who spend more in a salon because for them at least it lasts longer.

Have any guys seen the Art of Shaving shop at Lenox Square? They offer the old world type of shaves. BUT….its a WOMAN doing the shaves!!!!! What does a woman know about shaving a mans face? I dont even like going into a mens clothing store or shoe store and being helped by a woman. A woman knows NOTHING about how a nice dress shirt feels to have on or how a suit is supposed to fit!!!!! I would consider going to this place but i better not see women doing the shaves.

Steve, oh Steve, I won’t even hazard a guess as to what age you are. I imagine that a nice blouse and suit on a woman will feel as good as a nice dress shirt and suit on a man. As a woman, I get my hair cut in a barbershop by a woman and 90% of the customers are hers, even with 4 other male barbers there. She does it all and they love it. So,crawl out of your outdated shell and follow the crowd.

Most men I know need the most advice on oral hygiene. They don’t brush properly and never floss. Forget regular dental appointments and cleanings.

Yuck.

mamaj, oh mamaj. I’m not as old as you probably think i am . I’m 41 and am male….a white male at that and proud of it. I’m not some dandy metro/homo sexual. Also, you say 90% of the customers where you get your haircut go to a woman. Where do you get your haircut?????? At Ansley Mall???

By rj

January 26, 2008 9:53 PM | Link to this

poor steve…the same guys you are referring to in the “ansley mall” comment are the same guys that most of your women friends wish were straight..most straight guys (like yourself?)are so insecure in their masculinity that they believe it’s ‘feminine’ to have decent hygiene. i bet youre the kind of guy who leaves coarse butt-hairs on the bar of soap!

By mamaj

January 26, 2008 9:54 PM | Link to this

Steve, it never dawned on me that you were gay or METRO/SEXUAL, or even that you were white, but I’m glad you cleared that up. No, I don’t get my hair cut at Ansley Mall, but re-read your blog and just hear how outdated you sound. When you saw the shop at Lenox did you see droves of men heading for the hills when they also discovered a woman doing the shaving?—I THINK NOT!

Fellas, would you like for your woman to give you a pedicure? I offered to do that for the guy I was dating, thinking he’d like me tending to him, touching, pampering him. Does the word “pedicure” still sound too girly for most men? I think he would’ve loved me sitting low and serving him. He’d never had it done before (okay, fine), but I was saying give it a try! I stopped seeing him cuz he was blocking my need to care for my man and to treat a man.

I think that any man that gets a manicure is suspicious. Unless they are wearing a dress, there is no need for a man to get a manicure,.

I’ve had my back waxed at ladie’s spa’s and always felt kind of insecure about it. I’ll give this place a shot and see what they can do. I’ll pay the money if the service is right — sounds like they have it right but I’ll be the real judge of that.

Just had a hair cut there yesterday. Cool place and the hair cut was the most precise I’ve had in years. Nicole cut it and she’s a class act. Good joint.
