  • In August, celebrity gossip site TMZ published photos of Britain's Prince Harry prancing around naked during a coed game of strip billiards in a Las Vegas hotel suite. Meanwhile, French tabloid Closer published photos of the Duchess of Cambridge, the former Kate Middleton, sunbathing topless. A court later ruled that the photographs of the duchess, taken while she and Prince William vacationed at a private villa in the south of France, had violated Kate's rights to privacy and image control.
  • Following the overwhelming failure of the T-SPLOST vote, it became apparent even to supporters that pushing the transportation referendum during a primary season rife with voter distrust in government probably wasn't the best political move. Metro Atlanta voters in July rejected the $7.2 billion T-SPLOST referendum, which business leaders had called an essential bulwark against regional decline, by a nearly 2-to-1 margin in the region's 10 counties.
  • Tim Tebow, who led the Denver Broncos to the playoffs last year, was acquired by the New York Jets in a March trade. But as a backup quarterback to Mark Sanchez, Tebow has mostly been a sideline spectator this season, helplessly watching the New York Jets' offense struggle. According to a November report in the Daily News, more than a dozen players and members of the Jets organization said there's no chance Tebow could overtake Sanchez for the starting quarterback job -- with one saying of the backup:
  • This year saw a lot of changes in technology -- and, of course, not everyone was thrilled about them. Microsoft unveiled a radical redesign of its world-dominating Windows operating system in October, introducing a touch-enabled interface. But the new OS baffled some consumers. Meanwhile, Apple was dealing with customers' mostly negative response to an update of its iPhone and iPad operating system that replaced Google Maps with Apple's own map application.
  • Last May, former Gwinnett County Commissioner Shirley Lasseter admitted she accepted $36,500 from an undercover FBI agent posing as a businessman seeking her vote for a Boggs Road real estate development. She pleaded guilty to a bribery charge, and in September, U.S. District Court Judge Charles Pannell Jr. sentenced her to 33 months in prison.
  • This Lifetime reality show, which followed the lives of Whitney Houston's family following her death, received tepid ratings. Critics complained that the series, shot mostly in metro Atlanta, was boring and exploitative.
  • Braves fans weren't the only ones angry about the decision to change the Wild Card to a single-game playoff.
  • Facebook began trading publicly in mid-May following one of the most anticipated stock offerings in history. The IPO priced at $38, but the stock quickly lost half its value in the following months. The good news is that the stock has been climbing upward -- albeit slowly -- since, hovering around the $27 mark in early December.
  • The Atlanta City Council voted 10-4 on Dec. 3 to raise salaries by more than 50 percent for members who will take office in January 2014, after next year's election. The pay increase sparked a wave of criticism in online forums and during the meeting. City Council members say they're not paid enough for the hours they put in, especially with their pay essentially frozen for the last six years.
