Health Tip: Cold Sores Can Be Treated (HealthDay News) -- Cold sores -- small blisters on the mouth caused by the herpes simplex virus -- can be embarrassing, but the symptoms can be treated, according to the Loyola University Health System. If you have severe symptoms, such as lip tingling, itching and irritation of the mouth, soreness around the mouth, or small blisters on the mouth that burst and crust over, treatments may include idoxuridine paint and acyclovir, which is an antiviral drug. Herpes may be dormant for long periods, and some people may not show symptoms during their first outbreak. Cold weather, hot sun, and a depressed immune system can lead to more frequent outbreaks.
