Health Tip: The Skinny on Liposuction

(HealthDayNews) -- For adults who accumulate fat that exercise and diet can't banish, liposuction may help, according to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.

Liposuction can remove fat from nearly all body areas and treat many noncosmetic fat accumulations, including lipomas (benign fatty tumors) and gynecomastia (fatty male breasts).

The tumescent form of liposuction involves injecting large amounts of a diluted solution into fatty deposits -- usually including a local anesthetic and adrenalin to shrink capillaries and prevent blood loss.

A small incision is made in the skin and a small tube connected to a vacuum is inserted into the fatty layer by the dermatologic surgeon. The fat is drawn through the tube into a collection system.
