Joint sprain
First Aid 1. Restrict the movement of the affected area. Use a splint if necessary (see how to make a splint). Do Not: Call Your Health Care Provider Immediately If:
2. Avoid activities that cause pain or swelling. Rest.
3. Apply cold compresses immediately (this will help reduce swelling). Avoid using ice directly on the skin.
4. Bandage the affected area firmly, but not tightly. ACE bandages are good for this.
5. Raise the swollen arm or leg joint above the level of the heart -- especially at night while sleeping.
6. Think RICE for sprains (R = Rest, I = Ice, C = Compression and immobilization, E = Elevate the area).
