Definition:
An aggressive form of cancer of the thyroid gland.
Causes and Risks Anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid is one of the most rapidly growing and invasive types of thyroid cancer. It occurs most often in people over 60 years. The cause is unknown. Thyroid function tests are usually normal. Other types of thyroid cancer are papillary carcinoma, follicular carcinoma, medullary carcinoma, and thyroid lymphoma; these are very different diseases and will not be discussed here. Anaplastic carcinoma accounts for only about 1% of all thyroid cancers and is a very rare disease.
