Prostatitis - non-bacterial
Overview | Symptoms | Treatment | Prevention
NBP; Prostatodynia; Pelvic pain syndrome
Definition:
An inflammation of the prostate gland of indeterminate cause.
Causes and Risks The exact cause of non-bacterial prostatitis (NBP) is not known. There are many theories currently being studied. Fungus, viruses, trichomonads, and obligate anaerobic bacteria have been suspected as causative agents. Chemical prostatitis caused by intraprostatic reflux of urine has also been implicated. Up to 65% of the patients presenting with chronic prostatitis have the non-bacterial form. The disorder is seen in 5 of 10,000 outpatient visits.
