Symptoms

Signs and Tests

  • low blood pressure, fast heart rate
  • stiff neck
  • rash
  • elevated white blood cell count (in blood)
  • spinal tap for CSF showing increase white blood cells, low glucose, high protein
  • CSF stain showing white blood cells and sometimes meningococcus
  • CSF culture growing meningococci
  • blood culture growing meningococci
  • head CT is usually normal (if done)
