Mucormycosis

Overview | Symptoms | Treatment | Prevention

Alternative names:

Zygomycosis

Symptoms

  • rhinocerebral mucormycosis (sinuses/brain): acute sinusitis, fever, eye swelling and protrusion of eye orbit (proptosis), dark nasal eschar, redness over the skin overlying sinuses
  • pulmonary mucormycosis (lung): fever, cough (may include blood), shortness of breath
  • gastrointestinal mucormycosis (gut): abdominal pain, vomiting blood
  • cutaneous mucormycosis (skin): single, painful, hardened area of skin which may have a blackened central area
  • renal mucormycosis (kidney): flank pain and fever

Signs and Tests

Mucormycosis should be suspected in individuals with immune disorders (eg. diabetics, individuals after transplantation) who have symptoms described above, in particular those relating to rhinocerebral mucormycosis (sinusitis, fever, eye swelling). Depending on the site of involvement, CAT scans or MRIs may be performed. Evaluation by an ear-nose and throat specialist is recommended if sinus involvement is suspected. To definitively diagnose mucormycosis, tissue specimen must be obtained and analyzed.
