Tardive dyskinesia
Definition:
Involuntary movements such as tongue thrusting or facial grimacing caused by side effects of certain drugs, including antipsychotic medications (haldol) and other dopamine antagonists. The condition may be reversible if recognized in the earliest stages by stopping the offending agent but may be permanent. Paradoxically, if the anti-psychotics are stopped after the tardive dyskinesia has been present for a long period, the condition may become significantly worse.
