Barbiturate intoxication
Overview | Symptoms | Treatment
Intoxication - barbiturates
Definition:
Barbiturate intoxication occurs when excessive and prolonged dosages of barbiturate drugs, such as phenobarbital, produce chronic symptoms such as forgetfulness (memory loss), irritability, and changes in alertness and decreased interpersonal functioning.
Causes and Risks Barbiturate abuse is still a major addiction problem, though it has been partly replaced by other depressant drugs such as benzodiazepines. Often, abuse starts after the drugs are initially prescribed to treat a pain syndrome or seizure disorder.
