Definition:
Dysfunction of the basal ganglia, which is a brain region involved in motor control and movement.
Causes and Risks Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal degeneration, multiple systems atrophy, Wilson's disease, dystonia as well as other less common illnesses can all cause basal ganglia dysfunction. In addition, any insult to the brain may potentially damage the basal ganglia including strokes, metabolic abnormalities, liver disease, multiple sclerosis, infections, tumors, drugs, or trauma.
