Ganglioneuroblastoma

Overview | Symptoms | Treatment

Definition:

A tumor arising from nerve tissue.

Causes and Risks

This is a rare tumor which affects children more often than adults.

Tumors of the sympathetic nervous system vary in the degree of differentiation, which determines how they appear under the microscope and whether or not they are likely to spread (benign tumors are less likely to spread; malignant tumors are aggressive and fast-growing). The ganglio-neuroma is a benign tumor while a neuro-blastoma occurring in children more than a year old is generally malignant.

A ganglio-neuro-blastoma is an intermediate type tumor (which ranges between benign and malignant). It may be localized to one area or widespread, but is usually less aggressive than a neuro-blastoma.
