Children and tonsillectomies
Information In most cases, inflammation of the tonsils can often be successfully treated with antibiotics. There are always risks associated with surgery. However, if your child shows symptoms of loud snoring, restless sleep, poor growth, or mouth breathing accompanied by recurring tonsillitis, consult your physician about a tonsillectomy.
Question:
Is it wise for children today to get their tonsils removed?
Answer:
In most cases, unless a child has at least 7 or more episodes of significant tonsillitis in one year, has enlarged tonsils that cause obstruction of swallowing or breathing, or has hearing problems, surgery for removal of the tonsils is usually not recommended.
