Allergies and genetics

Overview

Alternative names:

Inherited allergies; Genetics and allergies

Information

Question:
Are allergies inherited?

Answer:
Yes, often they are. A specific allergy is not usually inherited, but the tendency to develop allergies is inherited. If both parents have allergies, the likelihood of their child having allergies is as high as 80 percent. Smoking can trigger allergies in those who are at risk.
