Margarine vs. butter

Overview

Alternative names:

Butter vs. margarine

Information

Question:
Is margarine healthier than butter?

Answer:
The fats in margarine have a lower risk for causing heart damage than the fats in butter. However, squeeze or soft margarine has less saturated fat (the important thing to avoid) than the stick type of margarine. The American Heart Association recommends using margarine as a substitute for butter, but also recommends choosing soft margarines (liquid or tub varieties) over harder, stick forms. The margarine should have no more than 2 grams of saturated fat per tablespoon, and should have liquid vegetable oil as the first ingredient.
