Gastrectomy
Definition:
Partial or total removal of the stomach.
Description An incision is made in the abdomen, and a portion or all of the stomach is dissected free from surrounding tissues, its blood supply controlled and ligated (sewn off), and then removed. Depending on the operation, the intestine is then reconnected to the remaining stomach (in the case of a partial gastrectomy) or the esophagus (in the case of a total gastrectomy).
