Tony Joe White
| Sunset Rubdown | |||
AN OVERLOOKED CLASSIC: You might not know this Louisiana-born musician's name, but you've probably heard his music. In 1970, Brook Benton took White's "Rainy Night in Georgia" to No. 4 on the singles chart, and Elvis Presley's version of "Polk Salad Annie" is more widely known than White's 1969 Top 10 hit recording. He's touring in support of a new album that includes guest spots by Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, JJ Cale and Michael McDonald. It also includes one of the last recordings of the late Waylon Jennings.
• THE 411: 7 p.m. $20; $17.50 advance. Smith's Olde Bar, 1578 Piedmont Ave. N.E., Midtown. 404-875-1522, www.smithsoldebar.com.
Cinetrope
A FINE ROMANCE: "Ochre Haze," the opening track from this Atlanta quartet's new CD, sounds like a jazzier and less synth-centric Stereolab, but that's just part of the story. The flexible, free-ranging vocals of Sharron Scott contain traces of Siouxsie Sioux and Beth Gibbons more often than the 'Lab's Laetitia Sadier. Cinetrope's stylish bounce most often recalls the criminally underrated and largely forgotten Canadian group Martha and the Muffins. Go see this CD release show, grab a copy of Cinetrope's groovy "This Strange Romance" and then go check out the Muffins' "This Is the Ice Age." With Five Eight, the Lord Is My Shotgun.

SATURDAY, SEPT. 30
Sunset Rubdown
IN POP'S ALTERNATE REALITY: "Shut Up I Am Dreaming" is the debut full-length album from this band led by Wolf Parade keyboardist Spencer Krug. Krug's oddly shaped songs stretch the boundaries of pop music, taking unexpected turns toward some startlingly memorable places. The album's final track — "Shut Up I Am Dreaming of Places Where Lovers Have Wings" — begins with just finger-picked acoustic guitar and Krug's insistent high-pitched vocals, which are soon surrounded by gathering clouds of bells, organ and piano. We're nearly halfway through the song's 7:23 running time before the drums kick in and a demented yet surprisingly musical guitar squall sends it into another dimension. Things just get stranger and more memorable from there. With Beaver.
• THE 411: 9 p.m. $10. Lenny's Bar, 486 Decatur St., Atlanta. 404-577-7721, www.lennysbar.com.
Jackson County Line
ON THE SIDE: Kevin Jackson takes time out from his gig as Atlanta band the Drexlers' guitarist and backing vocalist to front this side project. The band displays a fine and mellow take on Americana painted in shades of blue with the addition of trumpet and cello. It makes for a cozy and distinctive blend. The three-song demo is especially impressive considering this will be the quintet's first gig.
• THE 411: 10 p.m. $7. Red Light Cafe, 553 Amsterdam Ave., Midtown. 404-874-7828, www.redlightcafe.com.
MONDAY, OCT. 2
Ratatat, Envelopes, Panther
THREE OF A STRANGE KIND: This is a fascinating and freakishly diverse lineup that still makes some kind of weird sense. Instrumental duo Ratatat can come across like Kraftwerk with guitars on new album "Classics." These guys make a mass of electric six-strings sound repetitively mechanical — in a good way. Then, suddenly, they toss in what sounds like a lost Beatles song minus its vocal track on "Tropicana." Envelopes is a Swedish pop combo that retains all the melodic sweetness that its national heritage would indicate, but there's something slightly twisted about the pop on the band's latest album "Demon." It's like the Cardigans with a few screws loose, and that's a wonderful thing. Panther makes twisted lo-fi electro-disco and post-modern, art-damaged soul sung in a freaky falsetto.
• THE 411: 9 p.m. $10. The EARL, 488 Flat Shoals Ave., East Atlanta. 404-522-3950, www.badearl.com.
WEDNESDAY, OCT. 4
DJ Shadow
10 YEARS ON: DJ Shadow emerged in 1996 with the sampling master class of his debut album "Endtroducing," a genre-defining example of turntablism. It must take a long time to excavate and thread those grooves together because he's hardly been a prolific artist. "The Outsider," released Sept. 19, is only his third album, but this time he's got help from rappers such as David Banner, E-40 and Q-Tip.
• THE 411: 8 p.m. $30. The Roxy, 3110 Roswell Road N.E., Buckhead. 404-233-7699, 404-249-6400, www.ticketmaster.com.
