DeShawn Snow: Blessed to be a blessing

PB211435.JPG

DeShawn Snow with husband Eric, left, and NFL veteran Willie Whitehead. Photo by Ben Evans.

The Bravo cameras have stopped rolling for the moment but that’s not keeping the Real Housewives of Atlanta out of the public eye.

DeShawn Snow was joined by husband Eric and NFL veteran Willie Whitehead on Saturday to read stories to children at the Barnes & Noble store at Perimeter Center West. The joint appearance was a promotion for “Bedtime Stories,” the Disney movie starring Adam Sandler. It opens Christmas Day.

Earlier last week, DeShawn and Whitehead teamed up to bring holiday cheer to needy children in Atlanta and Union City. The group of 32 kids, served by the Young YMCA of Southwest Atlanta, enjoyed dinner at the Wing Lab before a shopping trip at Wal-Mart.

Both DeShawn and Whitehead have foundations that work with youths.

“I have dedicated my life to encouraging, empowering, and enriching the lives of teenage girls,” DeShawn told us by e-mail. “I’ve made a lot of bad decisions while growing up and I realize that my life could have turned out quite differently than what it is today.”

“I am living proof that you can have life and have it more abundantly regardless of where you come from, what choices you have made, or what labels you are given,” she continued, adding that she gets much from giving back.

“I am blessed to be a blessing,” DeShawn said.

As you probably know my colleague Rodney Ho, recently christened the AJC’s best columnist by readers of Atlanta Magazine, has made a mini-career lately out of chronicling the Housewives.

RoHo recently reported that Bravo has signed on for a second season of the “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.&#8221.

He spoke to one of the other housewives, Sheree Whitfield, who said her newfound fame from the show is helping her launch a clothing line.

Some of the photos from DeShawn’s storytelling session show video cameras capturing the scene. I asked whether that suggests the event might become a segment on a future RHA episode.

Stay tuned.

I like the idea of Giving Back especially at this particular time when so many are hurting and wondering when they’re job may be eliminated due to downsizing.

So, Mrs.Snow is here to remind us of the importance of Giving Back which I think is a very god lesson especially here at the holidays.

Let’s all find ways to say positive and lift UP each other! Instead of constantly tearing down.

Do you have something NICE to say? If not, zip your lip as my 2nd grade teacher use to say!!

Happy holidays to all!!!

Give it a break.

At least Mrs. Snow makes the effort to give back to the community. These are hard times. Sometimes the smallest gesture can bring a smile to someone’s face (especially those of children). It’s the holidays, why don’t some of you try to do something nice for someone other than yourself.

Might READ THE STORY before talking about proofreading. Sheree WHITFIELD is one of the housewives, Willie WHITEHEAD (pictured above) has a foundation and helped DeShawn with a program last week. “And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?”

She does very little, it appears, that doesn’t have something to do with celebrities and getting her face in the news.

I volunteer with students- I lead four student groups and work (VOLUNTEER-NOT paid) for a scholarship foundation. I don’t do it for credit, recognition, or to get my face plastered all over. I read to children (no cameras), mentor students (no cameras), volunteer with children at veterans’/military events (again, no press), in addition to other activities intended to help kids-and I know so many others out there doing the same.We do it because we know it is worthwhile….and have found ways to effectively make a difference,….

Her lame attempt at her foundation—and its “causel” raising self-esteem? please. How about starting a foundation to raise girls’ awareness of how important staying in school and furthering your education is?

Her pitiful attempt at raising money? Amateur hour…

Again, she isn’t the brightest bulb on the tree…

Thank you Whocares….why must there be cameras around when someone does good? Why does their name have to be plastered on everything? Go on get your glory and accolades down here.

They are only in the public eye, because the press keeps putting them there. Wow, a horrible representation of our great city reads books to kids and we have to write about it. It’s bad enough they are going to continue the show, but why does the AJC have to give them so much more press. THEY ARE AN EMBARRASSMENT TO THE CITY!

I think what Mrs. Snow is doing is wonderful. For that “Who Cares” person…I sense a little bit of green with envy from you. If you are THAT dedicated to helping those people you CLAIM to help, then you would have NEVER post what you posted on this website. It seems to me that you WISH you were in the lime light. I know that you are NOT doing what you are claiming you are doing out of the goodness of your heart. You need to do those children a favor and stop! Because you are obviously out for self!

Keep up the great work Mrs. Snow. May the Lord Bless you and give wisdom to people like ‘Whocares’.

Pandora, you strike me as the type that can’t miss People magazine, Entertainment Tonight and all of that other celebrity crap on TV and newstands. People give and voulnteer for many different reasons, and for 99% of them, it is not for recognition.

Yet here we have a HORRIBLE housewife of Atlanta, reading to some kids. Her “volunteering” (reading) for less than an hour probably took days to set up by a publicist getting paid stooooopid money. That’s limelight, not voulnteer work. But I’m sure she feels great because she spent 1 less hour acting like an idiot representing one of the greatest cities in the world.

It’s clear why Georgia is 49th in education. The lack of basic reading comprehension skill and scientific knowledge is in full effect in this blog.

“DeShawn Snow with husband Eric, left, and NFL veteran Willie Whitehead”.

Sheree Whitfield is not my type… But, it’s darn pretty hard to confuse her with a former NFL player.

As for Ms Snow’s foundation. I think it’s a great idea. Raising self-esteem for young women is a good way to make them aware of the importance of staying in school and furthering their education? She was reading to kids at a book store; It’s not like they were playing Nintendo Wii at Circuit City. Raising girls self esteem is a key part of empowering them to make responsible choices that will not hamper their futures. It’s beyond “stay in school”, “don’t do drugs”, “eat 5 a day”, “make good financial choices”, “work hard” or “don’t have sex”. A young lady with high self esteem will likely not make poor choices and grow into a powerful woman that respects herself. I applaud Ms Snow for recognizing that.

Did she get off to the best start fundraising? No!! But, practice makes perfect. No one does anything the best way the first time they try to do it. As for Rodney and the AJC. I think it was a valid news article. And, it’s not like there were hundreds of media folks there. Was this on CNN? Was it even on Bravo? Mr Ho’s job is to cover media stories in Atlanta. Clearly, this applies. I doubt she could have had this event without any media coverage. At least she is using her celebrity for something positive rather than financial gain or picking up grab bags of free items at a junket.

DeShawn looks like some of the cattle my family has on their ranch right now. This woman is a fake and an embarassment. On that stupid show she was on, when she wrote the tithe for $15,000 - it really took out the whole meaning of giving to the church when you flaunt it to the tv crews. What a joke. Nice charity by the way, teenage girl’s self esteem - translation, fat teenage cows that remind her of her younger days. DeShawn, go away, you are as irrelevant as your husband’s NBA career. By the way, who in the world is this Whitehead dude and how is he considered an NFL veteran?

Looking forward to all the morons and braindeads, that will say that I am just hatin’.

Date of birth: January 26, 1973 (1973-01-26) (age 35) Place of birth: Tuskegee, Alabama Career information Position(s): Defensive end Height: 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m) Weight: 300 lb (140 kg) College: Auburn William Whitehead (born January 26, 1973 in Tuskegee, Alabama) is a professional American and Canadian football defensive end, most recently for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League. He walked-on to play college football with Auburn before winning a scholarship. He graduated with a Communications degree in 1994, garnering 65 tackles and five sacks his senior season.

[edit] Pro career Whitehead began his pro career signing as an undrafted free agent with the San Francisco 49ers for the 1995 season. After being cut by the 49ers, he split time between the CFL’s Baltimore Stallions active roster and the 49ers practice squad. The following season he played with the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes and then in 1997 he led the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in sacks and added 44 tackles. After his strong showing in the CFL, Whitehead spent the 1998 training camp with the Detroit Lions before having a brief stint with the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe. In 1999, Whitehead found his place on a permanent NFL roster, earning a starting position with the New Orleans Saints, with whom he has remained for the last eight seasons of his NFL career. He has the second most sacks among current Saints players with 24.5 sacks (the other defensive end Charles Grant leads with 33). On June 15, 2007 the Saints released him.

YellowstoneSteve… Comparing a woman to a farm animal; you sound like a real classy guy. Who cares if she showed tv crews how much she gave the church. Some churches ask for W2’s or tell you how much you should give them (20%). That obsures the meaning as much as anything to me. Should going to church really cost money? Did Jesus charge people for his miracles or ask for financial documents?

Eric Snow has had a very relevant career. He was a big part of the 76ers and Cavs. Why such a need to insult others?

DeShawn got off to a shaky start on the fundraising endeavor, but she has gotten the hang of it and she is doing a great thing. I hate the show, but I like what she is about and how she wants to help those less fortunate. Good for her and her husband for remembering from whence they came. Sheree Whitfield, on the other hand, needs to take some classes on design, marketing and merchandising before starting her own line. It’s funny how people have money to throw around and they assume that’s all they need to launch a business. How quickly a fool and his money are parted. Meanwhile, people who care about their craft educate themselves and work hard to make sure they can take pride in what they produce. I just wish this woman would go somewhere and buy a clue.

ON the tithing comments: I was sickened by DeShawn’s $15,000 check to a church that is already bloated by beauracracy and financial shenanigans. It’s funny how church leaders make sure to talk about tithing and its Biblical basis, but never mention that this was a provision of the law to the nation of Israel. Jesus, in making the new covenant, never mentioned tithing or holding over any other portion of the Mosaic Law that he came to fulfill. Soooo, if we are no longer under the Law, why are pastors still pushing tithing? Scripture says that God wants a joyful giver. I’m not joyful if all I see is bigger church buildings going up, church leaders flying about in private jets and living in manions, and church members still struggling to pay their bills. I would be happy to give more if I saw church members benefiting directly from all this fundraising. If these mega churches are so wealthy, why isn’t every member’s debt-free? What a great way to spend the money. Churches could require extensive financial counseling before paying off members’ bills, and post-counseling to help them build wealth. Just a thought.

Too bad Atlanta has not taken advantage of the explosive star power of NeNe, DeShawn, Dwight, Lisa, Kim and Sheree for local holiday events. ie Christmas parade, New Year eve peach drop, etc etc. My TV nights are no more. Back to work on the laptop. TRHA are just great TV entertainment. They are the ladies you either luv2luv or U luv2hate. Personally I just love it.

I honestly don`t see how someone can be sickened by someone writing a cheque for $15000 I am sure you have spent $200 on alcohol or weed which is a lot compared to what you make. Pray that you will be able to write checks like that and not be in debt.

Clive, I’m sickened because we continue to enrich these hucksters we call religious leaders while the congregants live hand to mouth, praying for a miracle. I don’t spend my money on booze or weed and you have no idea what I make. But that’s not the point, and I understand by your weak argument that that is the best you could do. So let me guess: you’re one of the Sheeple or one of the elevated class of hucksters. Either way, let me hear a real argument for your position and we can debate.

You, my friend are an IDIOT!

How dare you act as if you know the WORD, yet put down the church. If that’s the way you feel, KEEP IT TO YOURSELF.

Remember when Noah’s son revealed his nakedness. That’s in essence, what you are doing. The Bible says that “they honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

Sorry for calling you an IDIOT. I shouldn’t have done that. :-)

btw. Her church is actually a GREAT church. I’m not a member, but I know some. You should go check it out before you make an opinion.

Andrew, I’m not an idiot, I just disagree with you. Jesus commended his followers for searching the Scriptures and set a fine example himself of always seeking out proof in the scriptures. Paul commended the Thessalonians and the Bereans for being diligent Bible readers. Church leaders are imperfect humans, just like you and me. It is your obligation as a Christian to make sure that what you are being taught or told from the pulpit is in fact in harmony with God’s teachings. Everybody who stands up at the pulpit may sound ordained, and may actually be ordained. But they can also be self-serving or misled. I have absolutely no reason or inclination to be jealous of any pastor. But I have the right as a Christian to search out the Scriptures for myself and to question the person who is teaching me. I have visited that particular church and I have met that pastor. He’s a nice guy, but just a man like you or anyone else. This habit we have formed of feeling like our pastors can do no wrong holds the danger of becoming idolatry. Are you supporting your pastor or are you elevating him to a position only our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ should hold? My suggestion is merely that if a church can raise millions of dollars, then why isn’t that money used to enrich and educate the congregation as well as the pastor? If a church raises millions, then there should be a program to pay off mortgages, offer FULL college scholarships to all members and their children, etc. And by the by, part of GROWING UP, as you put it, is having the ability to reason for your self and ask questions.

    nypreach,

First, let me apologize again for saying those things. They came from a place of anger when I read your posts.

I agree that we as believers have to study the scriptures ourselves. Not disagreeing with that, neither do I disagree with you on that pastors are imperfect as we and that the church should do more.

However, we must not simply look at numbers and assume that the giving is always there. Yeah, the church can raise millions in a year, but what about their budget. A church that size has more than 100 Staff employees (payroll), a huge church, which brings huge expenses to maintain and up keep, an enourmous light bill (They do have the same bills that we ourselves have at home, attorney fees because anything that big has to have representation at all times, and money to pay for initiatives that they do. I recall just recently (Thanksgiving), them giving over $100K to Hosea Feed The Hungry and then turning around and feeding over 2500 persons themselves, including the apartment complexes and neighborhoods around the church, even the Latino community in conyers. Not just one meal, but enough food for a couple of weeks. They have been in the Latino community for the past 2 years giving away clothes every month. Christmas, they bought toys for kids from over 250 families and fed the families. They are indeed doing the work of God. I just think that we have to be careful not to lump ALL pastors because of the church’s size or what a pastor drives into the category of wasteful spending. Look at the companies in our communities; they make so much, but give NOTHING (compared to what they bring in), their CEO’s have private jets, and ridiculous salaries, yet we don’t hold them to the same standard. That has to change!

Sorry if I offended you in any way. Again, it came from anger. Thanks for not stooping to the levbel that I tried to take it yesterday :-) That shows your character.

Merry Christmas and God Bless You!
