What’s the best fast food or quick service restaurant?

Quality and fast food aren’t always hand-in-hand. Still, most of us have our favorites. A new survey of customers of fast-food and quick service restaurants across America placed several restaurants with Atlanta outlets in the top 10.

Some of them are easy to find, like homegrown favorite Chick-fil-A, which came in at No. 5. Others with many local outlets include Panera Bread, at No. 3; Firehouse Subs and Starbucks.

But some have just a few outlets in metro Atlanta or around the state, like Ledo Pizza, with stores in Norcross and Duluth, and Raising Cane’s, a chicken finger spot with locations in Athens and Augusta.

Here’s the top 10 from the Sandelman & Associates Quick Track awards. (In-N-Out Burger, based on the West Coast, usually tops the awards but this year, Pei Wei, a quick-service restaurant from the folks behind P.F. Chang’s, took the top spot.) Neither have Atlanta locations. 1. Pei Wei 2. In-N-Out Burger 3. Panera Bread/St. Louis Bread Co. 4. Raising Cane’s 5. Chick-fil-A 6. Firehouse Subs 7. Chico’s Tacos 8. Ledo’s Pizza 9. Starbucks 10. Imo’s Pizza

If you’ve been to Ledo or Raising Cane’s, what do you think? What’s your favorite fast food restaurant or quick-service place, and why? Do you agree with the rankings on this list? Who got left off the list that deserves Top 10 status?

Assuming these qualify, Chipotle and Five Guys would be at the top of my list. Chick-fil-A is of pretty standard high quality.

Quizno’s is probably my favorite. I wish we’d get an In-N-Out Burger somewhere in the area, I want to try it after hearing about it all over.

Five Guys’ food makes the Varsity’s food taste dry. Do you rank them so high because the food slides down so easily?

Raising Cane’s is no better (or really any different) than Zaxby’s or Guthries.

  • In/Out Burgers 2. Five Guys 3. Zaxby’s 4. Moes SW 5. Willies Burritos. When we go to Cali, one of the first thing we do is hit In/Out Burgers. So…good and they have one on Fisherman’s Wharf in SFO! Five Guys is a simple business model built on quality. Zaxby’s has the BEST salad for the money. Chick Fil A is overrated. Too salty, even though their lemonade is awesome. Not on my best list, though. For Texmex, Willies and Moes is good and fresh. McDonald’s is gross, even though they have great fries..

I was excited when Five Guys came to town, I’d heard so much about them. So I ate there and got sick. Never been back. I agree with Red on Zaxby’s salads, they are awesome! I do like the Varsity, their chili is just like my mom’s. But to rank the best? I just don’t eat enough fast food to do that.

Chik-Fil-A chicken always tastes “off” to me…like poison. I hate it! Good lemonade and salads and brownies.

We had heard good things about In-and-Out, so we tried it while in Phoenix recently. A typical fast food burger, and very, very slow service. I think they claim everything is made to order, so, although it looks like a fast food joint, it takes forever. The burgers were standard, nothing special at all.

Five Guys, best fries of all fast food, good burgers. I’ll always love McD’s tho, have been addicted to it since i was a teenager.

I stopped eating fast food with any regularity a while back, so I’ve never been to the bulk of these places. In fact my definition of fast food is dated to the point that I question if some of these newcomers even fit. But to the topic, the only one of these newcomers I’ve tried is Willy’s and Five Guys. Five Guys was nothing to write home about, I too got bad indigestion the first time I ate there and have only been back once. Willy’s on the other hand I find to be quite different and delicious. I suppose in part because it breaks the burger mold. But whenever I do go to a fast food place, it’s usually because my regular lunch plans have been interrupted (I always bring something I’ve made) or if I’m traveling. When traveling, I always try to scope out a local barbeque joint. Arby’s, Burger King, Chick Fil A and McDonalds will suffice if I don’t come across any BBQ. While they are all the same from coast to coast, there is always a chance of getting bad food, and a greater chance of getting slow service. Fast food is always an oxymoron.

Wow. This is right down my alley. What a great topic. Here goes…

First of all…any place where I have to lug my big butt out of my car and into the restaurant to order my food cannot be deemed “fast food” for the purposes of this conversation. Agreed? Thank you.

Secondly…I refuse to throw Willy’s or Moe’s or Chipotle into the mix. Or Subway. Or Blimpie. Or any place where they make your food to your liking. That ain’t fast food.

“Fast Food” suggests that your burger has been sitting there under the heat lamps for a few minutes before you even order.

The fast food spots in Atlanta, for the purposes of this conversation, are going to be places like: McDonald’s, Arby’s, Wendy’s, Burger King, Krystal, Taco Bell, Captain D’s, Long John Silvers, KFC, Popeye’s, Dairy Queen, Checker’s and maybe a Zaxby’s (though it takes FOREVER to get your food there!).

Let’s rank them from there: I say McD’s, Wendy’s and Burger King all tie for #1…it really depends on what kind of a burger you’re in the mood for at that point. But what if you’re craving mexican? Taco Bell hands down. Or if you’re craving chicken? Zaxby’s, Popeye’s and KFC all have different tastes too.

Let’s face it, folks…it’s all a matter of your tastes at the moment of ordering, and the actual location of the particular restaurant that you go to.

Service is still very relative to your location. I can go to the McD’s on Ponce and get some horrible service, but I can go to the McD’s off of Chamblee-Tucker and get some great service.

In conclusion I find this subject, and this article, to be dumb. :)
