Home Sweet Home for Blais?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
BLAIS ON TOP CHEF: Will he stay at Home?
Photo: Bravo
My dining review in today’s Living section is of Home, a new venue for restaurateur Tom Catherall and Top Chef chef Richard Blais.
Catherall is known for the type of popular venues that put a butt in every seat until the next big thing comes along; Blais is known not only as a finalist on Top Chef but as the molecular gastro guru of Atlanta. The concept is farm-to-table (mostly) brought to the table in the form of savvy Southern fare. Seems an odd coupling, and an even odder menu for two culinarians who’ve never adhered to the local/ sustainable movement before….
But Blais is cooking better than ever, and the venue seems to work. At least to me it does. Have you been to Home? What did you think?

Since some repetitive jerk will inevitably say it sooner or later - I’ll get it out of the way early: “The best savvy Southern fare is that which I cook at home in my own kitchen and serve to my perfect beautiful family”. Eccchhhhh! Stab me in the eye with a fork!

Being the Top Chef fan that I am, I just had to try HOME! We went last weekend and were not disappointed! The oysters with the dippin dot Tabasco sauce were wonderful, the salad was flavorful, and the home-style veggies were flawless. The servers were friendly and knowledgeable and suggested the perfect wine to go along with my entree. My only issue was my salmon entree came out well done while I would have preferred medium-rare. Even so, it was a wonderful evening and I plan on returning soon!

Been to “Home” three times. Wanted to like it. Even with Richard in the kitchen, we were underwhelmed. Food was inconsistent and had a tendancy to be salty. Not really into the whole shaking hands kissing babies routine that was happening at the time of our dinner because of “Top Chef”. We will continue to support restaurants that have great food prepared by chefs who realize their talents and aren’t trying to think up the next gimmick or schtick that will give them added press. So enjoy the hype while it lasts for as the old saying goes…”history repeats itself”…

MF,
I like Blais and Catherall and your reviews, but how much credit can be given to a restaurant review where every member of the staff knew who you were? You deserve credit for admitting this, but I can’t help but feel sorry for other places that don’t have the luxury of knowing there is a critic in the house.

I have been to Home twice. It has been phenomenal both times.
The hype is a double edged sword though. If Blais doesn’t come out to the tables he is a jerk. If he does, then he’s ‘shaking hands kissing babies routine that was happening at the time of our dinner because of Top Chef’.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. The servers have been on point, as well. Everything has been fantastic. We will be going back, again and again.

I just took a look at the whole review of HOME and the pictures. I don’t know what kind of southern cooking that is but that plate of roasted foie gras, pickled strawberries, and buttermilk pancakes looks like something you would put out for the dogs.
