The BBQ debate: Your vote matters!

Faithful followers of this blog know that debating the best barbecue in metro Atlanta is allways a hot topic. That’s why we made it the kick-off category in our new Best of Big A poll.

From now through Labor Day, we’re asking you for nominations in a variety of topics, some food-related and some not. Then once all the nominations are in, we’ll have a big vote in September.

This is a chance to get your opinion heard. Head on over to the Best of the Big A blog and tell us who has the best cue in Atlanta. And you could even win a prize — a DVD set of the TV series “Mad Men” — in a random drawing.

Surprised that I only saw one person refer to a place outside of GA. I figured the blog would attract all sorts of naysayers.

The best barbecue in the world is Harold’s near the Federal Pen. My family and I have been going there since the 50s, and in all our travels we have found none to compare. The place is not fancy but the food is superb. The Brunswick stew and crackling cornbread cannot be matched. Sometimes the line is around the restaurant. Police Officer, Firemen, Working Folk, and Folks with Luxury Autos go there—if you go at a good time, you don’t have to wait, but wometimes we just leave when the line is too long. They have other Harold’s but they do not compare to the original.

There is no such thing as the best barbeque. The beauty in the subject is diversity. But, there are many very good places and some of them are almost unkown. Try Crazy Ron’s where E. Ponce de Leon ends in Stone Mountain Village. It’s in a small red railroad caboose. Ron is from Virginia and cooks his own pit ‘que, makes his stew Virginia style and really piles on the food. It’s pretty doggone fine, too, at about half the price of chains and pretenders that dominate the barbeque nation.

Ron is a good and decent man and you get quality, value and relevance.

I don’t know how you missed Jim N’Nick’s BBQ. They are a chain and I know most food writers dislike chains but they have really good BBQ and great sides. The sweet biscuits are to die for. Check it out South Cobb Drive at the East/West Connector.
