KOREAN BAKERIES: Delightful, delicious, delovely!

Photo Kimberly Smith/AJC

Today’s dining review explores a funky, fun spot in Duluth called Honey Pig, specializing in Korean samgyeopsal jip — pork belly barbecue. The restaurant owners claim it’s not a franchise, but it bears remarkable resemblance to several restaurants (one with the same name) in Los Angeles and its surrounding areas.

The Korean community has built a reputation for some of the best dining in the area — from tofu soup houses to barbecue (galbi) to the exquisite bakeries that have popped up across Gwinnett County.

One of the best is Bakery Cafe Maum, which has opened a new location on Steve Reynold’s Blvd. in Duluth. Korean bakeries delight in the art of French pastries and cakes with a Japanese influence, but often use rice flour in addition to wheat flour, which makes the crumb of cakes and breads super fine and delectable, but seemingly refined compared to hearth breads. Others I love: Mozart Bakery, newly minted Shilla Bakery & Cafe in Duluth (next to Honey Pig) and White Windmill Bakery on Buford Highway.

Galbi, which is beef short ribs, is just one kind of Korean barbecue. Bulgogi, which is perhaps more widely known, is thinly-sliced beef. There’s also spicy pork, chicken, etc.

Like the vast majority of Atlantans, I doubt that they are open-minded when trying out new foods… Hence only 2 comments when it comes to Korean bakeries… Go figure!

From article - ‘One of the best is Bakery Cafe Maum, which has opened a new location on Steve Reynold’s Blvd. in Doraville.’ Steve Reynolds Blvd is in Duluth not Doraville. A misprint like that is confusing as to the location since, unlike the posting by H of Marietta, I am an open-minded Atlantan and am a customer of the Korean bakeries popping up around town but now unsure exactly where the Cafe Maum is located based on the location typo above.

Cafe Maum is wonderful! I live very nearby. It is located about 2 miles north of 285 in Doraville area (actually Gwinnett County, just barely) on Buford Hwy, on the right side, in a very new shopping center. I went there yesturday to buy some gift cards and found that they are having, for the 1st time, live “smooth Jazz” event (a Korean artist). Sounds great! website is: www.bakerycafemaum.com

Try it you banjo-playin moron. It just might help you get into an ivy league college and help people like you build better cars/electronics.

Mozart Bakery just inside the perimeter on Buford Hwy is awesome. The cookies, cakes, breads, and other delectables are yummy as are the bubble teas. It is also very clean inside which is always a plus.

Cafe Mozart rarely disappoints. Delicious and beautifully packaged cookies are a favorite; lemon shaped mini pound cakes please my kids. I hope the savory pastries return soon - they make a great lunch. Avoid the odd garlic bread with cream. Probably an acquired taste, but weirdly sweet to me. Plus, at both locations, the interiors are immaculate and attractive. Tn fact, the interior of the Gwinnett one is full of amazing stonework too.

Had recommendations from people at Lee’s to try White Windmill as the best around. Hope to find it soon. Love to hear details.

I’ve tried pretty much all of the Korean bakeries from Suwanee to lower Buford Hwy and the best, biggest and more original is definitely WHITE WINDMILL on Buford Highway near Oakcliff (just OTP). They have a good coffee bar, handmade gourment chocolates, a great cake bakery for delicious personalized birthday cakes and an amazing selection of cookies, cakes, buns and even sliced bread. ENJOY!

I heard that Hansel and Gretel is really good. It is near Satellite Blvd. in the Assi Supermarket center. No trans-fat and healthy but tasty.

Kiki, I was going to suggest Hansel and Gretel too! I spent last summer studying in Seoul and love the atmosphere almost as much as the food - it reminds me of my time in Korea.

i can’t get used to Bean Paste in my sweet rolls. But these places are really nice inside, and have good coffee and cakes. Its definitely a welcome addition to Buford, and they are some of the best spots on the whole of Buford road.
