Where’s Your Favorite Chinese?

chinese.jpg

CAFE 101’S GROOVY INTERIOR IS JUST ONE REASON TO VISIT THIS VERY GOOD CHINESE RESTAURANT

Photo: Becky Stein/special to the AJC

Atlanta isn’t exactly known for its Chinese restaurants, but we have our few. Today’s review takes a look at a very good Chinese restaurant on Buford Highway, Cafe 101, which specializes in Chinese, Szechuan and Chinese-American dishes.

There are others: Canton House, Tasty China (my vote for #1), Chef Liu (great dumplings), China Delight. Finding Chinese isn’t what’s hard. Finding good Chinese — with authentic dishes — is the challenge.

What’s your favorite Chinese restaurant in Atlanta?

Chin Chin is a poorly modeled franchise. You have no idea whether the ‘quality,’ a term I use loosely here, will remain unchanged from location to location. I say Chin Chin is for people who equate McDonald’s with quality burgers or Pepsi with good Coke.

DRAGON EXPRESS on Peachtree in Brookhaven is the BEST CHINESE DELIVERY in ATLANTA! Hands Down. I will not go anywhere else. Fast delivery, even faster if you pick it up yourself.

Try Mongolian Chicken, MuShu Pork. Killer lunch specials during the week, egg rolls and dumplings will make you want to rob a bank and buy them all.

There is no better Chinese restaurant than Mah Jong in Snellville. As an ex-New Yorker with lots or Chinese food experience, it is the BEST Chinese food I’ve ever eaten outside of NY. And you can tell, because you recognize the same people in there all the time. Yum, I’m getting hungry just thinking about it.

Xian China Bistro in Alpharetta is incredible! High quality food, good service and an upscale environment. Very different than the typical Chinese restaurant experience - worth the drive.

No doubt, Canton Cooks in Sandy Springs (Whole Foods SC) is the BEST..in Atlanta. Even my neighbors originally from Brooklyn said it rivals their fav place in NYC. The service, location and food is always consistent and with fair prices. They pack the house every night with regulars, so we know they are doing something right!

I second JJack on Xian off of Windward - it never disappoints. I love watching the chefs in the open kitchen. There are inventive specials and they can really turn up the heat for some extra spice in almost any dish.

Lee’s Golden Buddha in Buford, GA We used to live up there and got to know the owners and staff we ate there so much. Always fresh and tasty. The best eggrolls and crab angles around. There are other Golden Buddha restaurants in the state, but none as good as the one in Buford.

I don’t eat chinese food because I am against animal cruelty. The meat cooked and used in their dishes is none other than cats, dogs, rats and any other nasty animal they can find to cook.

I get sick to my stomach just thinking about it!!!!

The best Chinese Restaurant is New Paradise on Buford Highway (across from the CDC). Waitstaff is frendly and helppful, especially- Jackie, Chin and Eric. Everything on the menu is good. Highly recommend Sweet Sour Seafood Soup, Crunch Mango Walnut chicken, any of the Hotpots. Yummy. Also like that they are open until 2:00am so when it is 10 or 11 and you want a really nice meal and don’t want to be chased out. Join all the native diners at New Paradise.

I don’t think it’s there anymore, but Mandarin House in Cumming used to be really top notch. Best hot and sour soup I’ve ever had by far. I really miss that place. Ask Norman Baggs how good it was, he’ll vouch for it.

Chef Lee’s Peking II in Columbus, GA has the best Chinese food in the area. They are nationally recognized. If you’re ever in Columbus, go to Peking II off Bradley park Drive.

A second for Little Szechuan. It is authentic and very good. And has a few American palate friendly dishes, too.

With a doubt, it is Chef Fung She It’s famous Chinese eaterie. Food so fresh, it barks at you from under its blanket of sweet sauce. He has helped me embrace the Chinese traditional preparation method of, “if it moves, put some sauce on it and serve over rice”. Yummmmmmmmmy! arf!

Little Bangkok on Chesire Bridge road merits very well. Always fresh, spicy, served hot and quickly. Not a budget breaker either, lunch for 2 can be had for under $15.00 depending on selected entree. As far as being clean, it’s spotless inside. The building is a dive however,a mid 60’s strip shopping center that looks bad from the road. The neighborhood also incorporates strip clubs and porno shops. Many would consider this a plus I would assume. Another down side is parking is horrible. They have about 8 spaces in front and around the building. But if you can jump over these hurdles, it’s worth the trip.

I’m Chinese and a New Yorker and here are my picks. For Cantonese food, China Cooks and Canton Cooks in Sandy Springs are the best I’ve tried. Sometimes you have to ask for the Chinese version on some dishes because the “regular” one is Americanized. The food can be a little greasy for my taste though, but overall it’s a good example of my favorite region of Chinese cuisine. The food court in Old Chinatown has some very authentic selections from other regions of China not typically found in your average Chinese place. FYI, your average Chinese place is Americanized Cantonese food. I have yet to find a great Sichuan restuarant, although I’ve heard great things about Tasty House. Sichuan House in Johns Creek is decent but not the best because they fail to use Sichuan peppercorns in their cooking.

P.S. Little Bangkok is not Chinese.

The best used to be Superior Wok in Alpharetta near the Dicks Sporting Goods. But they changed owners and now it’s good - but not the best. My favorite is now Simons on Old Milton in Alpharetta. Their lunch is still $7 and outstanding quality and quantity.

Chin Chin (again?), Xian in Alpharetta, PF CHANGs? Are you all kidding me? I can barely believe I’m reading these suggestions. These places are terrible. You all must have either burned your taste buds out to eat at these mediocre establishments, or intentionally want to deprive yourselves of delicious Chinese food. It’s almost like you all want to get pizza from the WalMart food court and say you’re eating good italian food.

By the way, Little Bangkok does indeed have a Chinese menu, but their Thai food is killer.

Dragon Express 100% Awesome Good Time. Look it up, try it, if you don’t like it, bring me your leftovers!

Golden Buddha on Clairmont… good call. I love that place, too.

Seriously… P F Changs? Are you kidding me? Who are you?
