Gwinnett growth slows - good thing or bad?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
You may have seen the story in the metro section of today’s paper about growth in these here parts. What surprised me were the numbers for Gwinnett. We apparently are experiencing a slower population growth when compared to recent years.
The county’s population in 2007 was 740,200; this year, based on estimates by the Atlanta Regional Commission, it is 752,800. That’s a paltry increase of 12,600 residents, or a 1.7 percent increase, according to the article. Usually, Gwinnett adds 20,544 new residents per year.
My question is this. Do you think the sluggishness is a good thing or bad thing? And all long do you think it will last?

I think Gwinnett could go negative population growth if the Illegals were dealt with properly.
*FAIR estimates the foreign-born population in the county in mid-year 2007 to be about 190,805 persons *.

It’s a GREAT thing. Slowdown will slow down developers and builders and further discourage nore illegals moving into the area and make many more move out.

The good news: Illegal aliens are leaving as a result of job loses.
The bad news: U.S. Citizens are losing jobs, incomes, houses, and will be facing higher taxes too due to this “slow-broke economy”.
Oh well, no pain no gain. ˇˇE-ha!!
Not going to answer last question, until after the election.

It isn’t “the illegals” that are leaving; it’s the people who are tired of living in a declining area. If Gwinnett voters don’t figure out how to move their county into this century (transit, smart growth practices, new business) the county is going to falter. A sea of stripmalls and pawn shops will wash away anything good left in Gwinnett. For all of you in the north end that don’t think that is your problem, you better wake up and figure out that it’s creeping your way.

Calm down Mike. The unemployment rate is only 5.7%. Pretty low historically.
Thank god you don’t live in Europe, you would have a coronary.

Raz,
You hit the nail on the head. That’s the untold story. Not that people aren’t moving here, there are just more moving out of here.

Gwinnett growth slows as illegals leave and all of the Hispanic businesses on JCB close their doors. Let’s bulldoze the entire area and build a park!

Don’t over play your hand LT. Seven months of negative job growth is not pretty low historically.
Job losses likely persisted for 7th month

Bureau of Labor Statistics: Employment Situation Summary
The Surge is Working!
Consumer prices up sharply, job market softens
Even the White House conceded that the economy’s vigor has been drained and won’t reappear for some time, casting a shadow over campaigning for November’s presidential elections.
“It will take some time for the economy to turn around but we are confident in the long-term fundamentals and underlying strength of our economy to get us through this period,” White House spokeswoman Dana Perino told reporters.

Worse in Georgia Mr. Smith…Georgia’s jobless rate highest in 15 years By MICHAEL E. KANELL

Georgia’s jobless rate climbed last month to 6.2 percent.

Dang it, wouldn’t you just know it. The first time Georgia tries to claim being the best at anythin’, ‘long comes CallyFornia (sic) to best a homegrown claim to fame to misery.
California’s unemployment rate rises to 7.3%
Oops, oops… wait a minute. Looks like bragin’ rites (sic) goes to Florida as first in the increased unemployment rate worst, followed by second place runner-up Michigan.
Florida unemployment worst in 13 years
The job loss was the largest in the nation, and nearly twice the size of second-place Michigan.
Texas led the nation in job gains, with 248,700 new positions created over the past year.
Ah, but should have known ol’ “baby oil” Tex got’em covered back home in Texas. Could 248,700 new positions be considered an earmark?
Geezzz, and all this time I thought Bar B Q in Texas was beef, not pork.
Silly me, tsk, tsk, tsk.

Mark proves you can never get rid of the ignorant uneducated Rednecks in this county.
Wonder how the U.S. Labor Department can reach such a low average, oh, I forgot the grest monthly correction that shows the real numbers a couple of months later!

They sky is falling the sky is falling.
Our resident Chicken Littles Brucie and Mike seem to think that 5.6% unemployment rate is the end of the world.
Christ, you two need to man up and grow a pair.
Europe has 2% higher unemployment rates while Canada is running at 6.2%.
Some people just don’t know how good they have it.
I see the economy getting much better over the next year as the dollar rises and oil gets cheaper.
The real surge will occur after Obama gets his a* handed to him in November.
You guys be careful. Being scared of your own shadow could lead to a heart attack.

Mikey,
You are proving yourself to be a hyperventilating moron like Brucie here.
I posted the fact that 5.6% unemployment is historically low and that Europe and Canada have significantly higher unemployment rates.
Spouting off with nothing to back it up is protected under Brucie’s copyright?, have you initiated a hostile takeover?
Maybe you and Brucie could plan a Sunday visit to the library and read a few economics books. They come in very handy if you want to speak about the economy.

Sluggishness in the national economy will be mirrored in Gwinnett - that is what it is.
What bothers me is that when we do come out of it will be Bannister, Lassiter and Kenerly running the county.
Does that make anyone feel better about Gwinnett’s chances for recovery? Excuse me while I go take some Pepto to calm the nausia.

Come again LT, not backing up what? You are delusion old chump. I put plenty of facts up and you cannot repudiate them. You only make yourself more ridiculous the longer you try to deny reality. Inflation is up, wage increases are below the rate of inflation, unemployment is up, food costs are rising, bank failures are up, foreclosures are up, medical costs are up. I’ve notice more local businesses, going out of business. Only two modest economic upticks have occurred as of late. The price of oil has retreated a little for the moment and manufacturing advanced slightly for the first time in a long time.
Ah but you and Kudlow still go on and on touting the greatest economic story never told.
Old pal, for the average American the Bush economy has been a disaster.
Your “white haired dude” Amnesty McSame best do a 180 on continuing in the globalization footsteps of Bush-o-Nomics or you and old bud Mark will wake up in November to greet “Chicago’s Finest” as President Elect Obama.

lt 6.5% is the State of Georgia’s unemployment rate, not Canada or Never-never Lands. I do believe that the article was written just for Gwinnett, the thing you wet your panties over so many times over Pixie.
You have been proven wrong by Mr. Smith and myself using data from the feds and states Labor Departments.
Except it pixie, talk to mommie or teddy, whatever you need. Sonny, I don’t know how many times I have invited you to stop by, I don’t hide behind some childsish handle, time to discuss issues face to face, yet you tell me to grow some cajones, hey pixie, I am not a hard man to find.
I’m sure Mr. Smith is impressed with your igorance and chickendung talk as I, I can promise you, Mr. Smith would be more than happy to discuss the issues with you face to face.
Lets see who needs to grow some cajones pixie.

Brucie and Mikey,
To our resident economic neophytes.
There is no recession, there is no recession. 5.6% unemployment is historically low. The world is not ending.
You two old hens are acting like this is the Great Depression, instead of a cyclic economic slowdown.
Thank God the Chicken Littles here aren’t in Bernake’s position, they would talk this country into a Depression within about 2 months.
I assure you two, if you had bothered to get an education past a GED, you would know that the economy isn’t too bad. Maybe you guys can go to the Welfare office together and get on government assistance.
Bruce, being a civil servant who never had to survive in the private sector, is an old pro at living off the government. He can show you the ropes Mikey.
