Suspicious Suspension
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Gwinnett County Administrator Jock Connell has suspended Gwinnett County police Chief Charles Walters without pay. It’s great to see him take disciplinary action against such a high-ranking official, but inquiring minds want to know what, exactly, Walters did that was so egregious.
In today’s article, Gwinnett County District 1 Commissioner Lorraine Green said she was told Walters was suspended because he campaigned against her during a staff meeting of about 75 to 100 people in a staff meeting held a week before the Aug. 5 Republican primary run-off.
In the runoff, Green narrowly lost against County Commission Chairman Charles Bannister.
Green may be right, but my gut tells me there’s more to this story. Otherwise, why would Connell clam up?
What do you think?

Badie,
I hate to break it to you, but that is the story.
I wish you would try to use your finely tuned journalistic insticts (hah?) to investigate some more important issues in Gwinnett County. I’m not refering to human trumpets or scooter sales.
Hey, maybe someday you could issue a correction to your moronic Recession article or admit how wrong you were on the Taser issue.
Still waiting for that ride along with the Norcross Police.

Rick, Another great blog entry. I agree that there is more going on than what is being told (of course nothing is really being said). Suspicious indeed
And another complete waste of time reading LT’s comment. I don’t know why I bother. All he does is whine whine whine. Seems as though understanding of Mr. Badies blog is beyond his reach.

Stan and Badie,
Let me give you halfwits a hint. You don’t get suspended for only 10 days if you did something really wrong. He will be back August 29th, just in time for Labor Day.
It’s a minor suspension for campaigning at a staff meeting. Lorraine probably filed the complaint.

Talk about a sore loser, first boo-hooing over signs on her front lawn, now one of most needed officals getting suspended and her posse fileing meaningless ethics complaints, kind of glad she lost, we need grown-ups to run the county.
Grown-ups like the sheriff who runs around secretly taping anyone who opposes his rule. A sheriff who hires a company to dig up dirt on one of his subjects. Our D.A. said it’s legal as long as he paid for it out of his own pocket, but as far as being ethical, well. Doesn’t having this Sheriff make you all sleep better at night, just hope you don’t talk in your sleep.

Perhaps the best question might be: “Why did this suspension and the news of the political nature of the offense not come out until several weeks AFTER Bannister won?”
I also note that Connell issued news of a hiring freeze and severe budget problems until two days AFTER Bannister won.
Perhaps the real news here is that Connell concealed information in such a way as to make sure that Bannister got re-elected? Perhaps Connell had to suspend the Police Chief to cover his own rear end?
What other bad financial news might we learn about that has been hidden from the public during the election?
As a tax payer I want the police to do their job no matter who is Chairman and I want the Police Chief to be above politics. I also expect Connell to take action WHEN PROBLEMS OCCUR rather than sweeping things under the rug to help certain politicians.
This all stinks. This county is heading south fast.
Keep on it Rick. Lord knows we need somebody in the press who will turn over the rocks and find the truth.

Hey Bozo Badie. Read your own paper, which used FOIA to get the personnel file.
“During the meeting, you referenced remarks made by and/or printed on the Web site of a current member of the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners and stated that these remarks were ‘lies,’” County Administrator Jock Connell wrote in the memo to Walters.
“Your comments have adversely affected the organization and reflect badly on the police department, as well as the county administrator’s office.”
Your really blew the lid off of this scandal. Sorry Badie, you aren’t Woodward and Bernstein. What a joke.

Sorry guys, no scandal here and nothing to uncover. The Chief got a little too specific for Lorraine’s taste at a meeting. That’s it.
But Badie, being the hack that he is, just knew there was more to the story. There had to be.
He calls that “journalistic instict”, I call it “musing of a malinformed moron”.
This story is disappeared faster than Badie’s Grand Slam breakfast at Denny’s. Unfortunatley there is still egg on Badie’s face.

Actually Bruce, yes I feel pretty good about having Butch Conway as our sheriff. I have no intentions of bashing the police chief, but what he’s being punished for doing happened on county time, not his own time. The things that the sheriff did were on his own time and not during an official police meeting. There’s a difference. Perhaps the chief is being used as a scapegoat, but the head of a dept is ultimately held responisible for their agency. Like the Fulton County 911 thing…
More on the sheriff…why on Earth would he be concerned about the nutjob who was harrassing Green? Could it be because he’s law enforcement? Should he have just waited it out and sat on his hands to see if anything untoward happened, so nobody would get their little feelings hurt? What about the fact that he was also being attacked daily and hounded to the depths of hell? He should’ve just played nicey-nice and buried his head in the sand. That’s what all good sheriff’s, or sensible people do, right? NOT.
You can’t have it both ways. You fuss when you think he’s not doing enough. When he does plenty, you fuss about that too. Consistency is key when you’re gauging his performance.
Green a sore loser? Puh-leeze. She’s shown so much class and integrity during this whole process, as opposed to who she ran against, that it’s not even fair to compare the two. Especially in light of the things that have been revealed afterward.
We’re stuck with Bannister now. And Lassiter. If anything, that’s what should question our ability to sleep at night.

Bruce Wilcox’s daily schedule:
Post diatribes against anyone and everyone who actually does something.
Get upset that anyone will challenge his diatribes.
Post more diatribes against those who challenge his diatribes.
Get mad at Republicans.

Badie has proven what an idiot he is twice today.
First with innuendo that there was more to this story and then in the subsequent article where he erroneously claimed that the NAACP wanted Wilbanks to resign.
I pointed out to Badie that he is a fat ignorant malinformed pudding of a man, and he has since altered his article.
You are right, a real journalist would issue a retraction or a correction. Badie just tries to cover it up.
Now you can go back to giggling to yourself over Badie’s Human Trumpet articles.

roska, I call them as I see them, funny you sound like one of Green’s posse, you accuse me of doing nothing yet have never met me? Or did I meet you hiding behind some computer screen.
Cindy come on Rick is one of Green’s posse, this only ran for a half day.
Cindy are you saying that the sheriff is Green’s personal bodyguard? Is that why the Police Chief was suspended?
Oh roska, mad at Republicans, now that’s funny, who else in this county government since 1985 can you get mad at? You really sound like a real whiner with that boo-hoo comment.

Connell wasn’t hiding anything regarding the Chief. Personnel matters are sensitive and off-the-cuff remarks can get an employer in trouble.
As he said in the original article on the suspension, Connell would let the Chief’s personnel file (public records, mostly) speak for itself. The documents provide all you need to know and all that Connell cared to say. That’s a good administrator.
And LT, at the risk of inciting another rant… for state and local records it’s the “Georgia Open Records Act,” not the “Freedom of Information Act” (FOIA). That’s for federal records. You, Rick, I and the rest should all be subject to the same standard of accuracy, right?

Cindy all I really asked was is the sheriff Green’s personal bodyguard? If she is harrassed like you said, does she go to the County Police or the Sheriff?
Gee, whatever happened to the First Amendment, a Police Chief can not speak out, but a Sheriff defending the honor of a maiden can run around taping people behind their backs?
Which is it Cindy?

I do not believe he recorded anything in reference to her, did he? If so, I’d be interested about what it was. The recording you’re referring to was about himself, wasn’t it?
Just to clarify what you’re referring to…the “nutjob who was harrassing Green” comment above…the person was being intimidating to her…the sheriff supported her politically…so he got the intimidation game played on him too…you were around during all of it…this isn’t news to anyone. That is what I was speaking about. Nothing more. Nothing less.

I believe the complaint was about the good sheriff’s deputies putting up signs for Green on the counties dime wasn’t it?
“More on the sheriff…why on Earth would he be concerned about the nutjob who was harrassing Green? Could it be because he’s law enforcement?” Again I ask, is this why the Police Chief, who has far more responsibility than the sheriff, in the county suspended? Again it seems like the good old sheriff is Green’s personal bodyguard. And Green is having a major temper tantrum.
Oh well, Green is out, the good sheriff is in, ethic’s aside.

why is everyone attacking badie? anyone with half a brain knows there is definitely more going on with this Gwinnett Police Chief Walters story. I respect badie for being unafraid and relentless in his reporting. maybe everyone doesnt know what happens when you try to shed light on a dark and gray area. chief walters and the gcpd will be in the spotlight again on september 25 at the gjac center on langley dr in lawrenceville, facilities conference center, room B, second floor 9AM…Be there or be square! Witness first hand exactly how chief walters and his underlings handle corrupt business! the only reason he received a 10 day suspension without pay is because he turned on one of his own. and who knows? his actual paycheck will probably still have his regular pay, just like the gwinnett county school superintendant.

Hey LT5000! What’s with the personal attacks? If you want to sound of on a blog pertaining to something so be it. Your ignorant and boorish comments are not only rude, but cowardly and offensive as well. I am sure you would never remove your white sheets of identity. Post an intelligent comment (if possible) or post nothing at all! And Thank you.
