"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" won five Oscars and Tim Robbins of "Mystic River" and Renée Zellweger of "Cold Mountain" won supporting honors for acting in early going Sunday night at the 76th annual Academy Awards.
Pixar's "Finding Nemo" won for best animated feature film.
With host Billy Crystal returning after a three-year absence, the show's jokes were plentiful and the acceptance speeches running longer than normal. The Oscars appeared headed for another epic night.
Robbins, considered the front-runner for best supporting actor, won the night's first award, which didn't come until 20 minutes into the proceedings.
"Oh, boy. Wow," he said. "This is a lovely honor. I'd like to thank my fellow nominees, who are all spectacular, and I want to work with all of you at some point."
In "Mystic River" Robbins plays a victim of child sexual abuse, and the usually politically minded actor used his acceptance speech to send a message to those who've suffered in real life.
"If you are out there and are a person who has this befall you, there is no shame in seeking counseling," he said. "It's the strongest thing you can do to stop the violence."
Zellweger, a best actress nominee and loser for the past two years for "Chicago" and "Bridget Jones's Diary," thanked her "Cold Mountain" co-stars Nicole Kidman and Jude Law, her family and several others. She also gave a little shout out to her "Jerry Maguire" co-star Tom Cruise for "showing me kindness and success weren't mutually exclusive."
"The Return of the King," which started the night as the leading contender for best picture, won for best art direction, costume design, makeup, sound mixing and visual effects. The latter included motion-capturing work for the groundbreaking, mostly computer-generated character Gollum that involved Atlanta-based Giant Studios.
At press time, 10 of 24 Oscars had been awarded.
