'Crossover' scores on the court, not in the story

Fans of streetball — the flashy, urban style of basketball performance art that's spawned its own stars, video games and even an ESPN series — will find lots of smooth moves to check out in "Crossover." But compared to those prodigious in-your-face fakes, alley oops and slam dunks, the movie's trite, trash-talking dialogue and drippy do-the-right-thing message fall as flat as an airball. TO SUM UP
A talented basketball player is determined to use his UCLA basketball scholarship to become a doctor, rather than succumbing to the lure of the NBA. His best friend, who served time for an assault charge, has less lofty ambitions: to get his GED and win an underground street ball game against an arrogant rival.
