'Gabrielle' takes no prisoners

Compact and gloriously contrary, Patrice Chéreau's "Gabrielle" casts a strange spell. This screen adaptation of Joseph Conrad's short story "The Return" recreates turn-of-the-century France to focus on the events that overwhelm a middle-aged, seemingly happily married couple.
