Watchable, passable comedy with good ensemble performances from Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin and Mark Wahlberg in the quirky tale of an environmental campaigner (Jason Schwartzman) who hires existential detectives to look into the mounting coincidences in his life. It's as nutty as it sounds. Director David O. Russell used some of the same nuances to propel "Three Kings," but this film too often shows how hard it's working to be whimsical. While a few scenes seem strained, some are inspired bits of lunacy.

"... sometimes, despite all its quick-on-its-feet humor and smarts, the movie tries too hard."
