'War of the Worlds': A thrilla like 'Godzilla'

Steven Spielberg's remake of the classic H.G. Wells' alien invasion story with a family twist, is one-half of a terrific movie. When it's in full throttle — when otherwordly invaders rear their ugly, plodding, head-banging machines and begin to annihilate Earth's humanity with vaporizing rays — there's not been and probably won't be a better action movie out there this summer.

READ THE REVIEWS

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: B
"As long as Cruise and the kids stay on the run, 'Worlds' works."

Austin American-Statesman: 3 of 5 stars
"The movie becomes pure primal thrill, humans reacting to the incomprehensible with raw vigor. Spielberg aids the rush with both kinetic and balletic camera moves — swoops of action."

Dayton Daily News: B+
"Despite Cruise's range, the face — and scream — many of us will mostly remember Dakota Fanning."

Middletown Journal: A+
"... the movie thrill ride of the year."

The Palm Beach Post: A
"As director Spielberg has acknowledged, this War of the Worlds reflects our post-9/11 universe. From the inevitable concern whether terrorists are behind an early power outage, to the frequent ash storms, to an eerie shower of clothing floating down from the clutches of the tripod machines, we are never fully allowed to escape into the realm of science fiction."

The Palm Beach Post "Flick Chick"
"Of course, the major threat in War is the alien insurgence, but it's special because it shows people battling the small stuff, like family conflict and their own schlubbiness, before they can win the war."
