Owen Wilson's best

Palm Beach Post
Friday, July 14, 2006

I love 'em all, but these are Owen Wilson at his scruffy man-child best:

1. Zoolander (2001): People say that Hansel, the improbable male model he plays, is 'so hot right now.' And he sure is, even with that messed-up nose, that just-out-of-the-ocean straggle of hair, and those shaggy outfits (Did he mug a llama?). He's sort of a jerk, but that's just because he's insecure. Plus, he can pull off his underwear without removing his snakeskin trousers. And this works for us.

2. Behind Enemy Lines (2001): (or Run Owen Run, as I like to call it.) Although he sports a military haircut and flight suit in this mostly-standard action flick, his special charm is still put to good use. There's a scene when, caught in an international policy dispute, the helicopter that's supposed to rescue him from rebel gunfire isn't allowed to land. Seeing it fly away, Lt. Chris Burnett looks up and exclaims, surfer-like, 'You gotta be (kidding) me!'

3. Wedding Crashers (2005): The closest any of Owen's characters have come to having a conscience, his John Beckwith starts out as a partier with a penchant for babes and free food, but winds up falling for a sweet girl with a bad boyfriend (who he gets to punch out in the end). So he loses his jerkiness, but not his edge. Perfect.
