Big Boi

Five hours into the last night of Vibe concerts, during the second-to-the-last performance, the festival transitioned from artists doing records to artists doing shows.

Or at least that’s how Sony executive Kawan ” K.P.” Prather described it.

Backed by a full band that deceptively made the Dome sound full, Antwan “Big Boi” Patton of Atlanta rap duo OutKast sounded great. Too bad he wasn’t the only act the audience heard during his time slot.

After a running start that included OutKast hits “Rosa Parks” and “The Whole World,” he, too, caught a case of special guest-itis and stepped back to let rapper Killer Mike, R&B singer Scar, rap group Konkrete and singer-producer Sleepy Brown perform.

“Ya’ll having a good time so far?” Patton asked 19 minutes in. And then he answered his own question, clearly based on the half-hearted applause: “Naw, naw, naw.”

Big Boi’s performance was further proof of why Andre 3000 is the steam behind the Outkast engine.

I have seen a lot of posts about Lauryn’s performance and how bad it was. While I don’t condone Lauryn’s behavior, as a professional artist she should be able to roll with whatever situation is given to her, but at the same time, COME ON!!!!

All artists had a scheduled alotted time to perform. Big Boi totally ignored that as if he was the last act, and I can tell you as an artist that it is hard to be the last act and follow up garbage.

Sonia’s review was kind and generous. Look, I will be the first to tell you, Outkast had a MAJOR impact on hip-hop and helped define Atlanta as a southern “mecca” of sorts. But Big Boi has always overestimated his own importance in that definition. If not for Andre 3000, Big Boi would be nothing more than the thousands of other unknown wanna-be rappers in Atlanta.

To let Sleepy Brown and Killer Mike on stage was unfair to Lauryn, that kind of behavior should not be tolerated, there were rules set beforehand on time slots and Big Boi ignored that. And left Lauryn to receive the ire of the crowd. And y’all wonder why she rolled up a FAT ONE!

JC - the show was running late long before Ludacris, Big Boi or Lauryn every stepped on the stage. I question if Big Boi can hold the stage on his own and he represented last year at Music Midtown but I really wasn’t feeling him at Vibe. But Andre3000 doesn’t want to perform…he’s focusing on his acting. So what is a group member to do?

I also think Big Boi and Andre 3000 need to do a free concert in Centennial Park as a thank you to their loyal fans. Andre, if my memory serves me right, ain’t been on stage since their last MTV performance not long after they won the Grammy.

JC-clearly from your comments, you were amongst the disappointed Lauryn Hill Fans. Her poor performance was not a reflection of Big Boi’s performance. Speaking of unfair, it was unfair for her to come out to give fans like you that sorry unfulfilled set (garbage)-especially being the last performance! Her behavior/performance is that of what shouldn’t be tolerated! She wasn’t the last act because she’s the BOMB (she proved that) but because of her band size. When was her last hit?

You were right in stating performers had their allotted time to perform. The delay was because Vibe Fest organizers allowing unscheduled performers to interrupt the show. Big Boi had 45 minutes allotted for his set which included performances from Killer Mike, Sleepy Brown, Koncrete, and Scar as most of his sets have. He made last minute adjustments to accommodate the Vibe Fest delay but he still gave his fans what they came for!

As an artist or not, don’t knock the next man’s PAID hustle! Outkast’s fame and fortune is clearly from both their efforts. Big Boi has Purple Ribbon Entertainment, LLC and Andre has chosen to do movies and other projects. They are still one UNIT making money from all avenues!

PLEASE do your research on the time slots of the Vibe Fest and scheduled performers! The blame falls on Vibe for allowing unscheduled performers to disrupt the show.
