1058 Howell Mill Road N.W., Atlanta. 404-874-8745
Published on: 02/03/2005
Atmosphere: A little on the ragged side, but that's part of its charm. The walls are adorned with photos of Georgia blues greats, giving the place a feeling of connection and reverence for the music's history. The club's Web site captures the vibe of the place: "Bikers meet Buckhead businessmen, South Atlanta meets Georgia Tech."
Honored alumni: The late great Atlanta bluesman Frank Edwards used to play here. Local guitar wizards Sean Costello, who's back for a CD release celebration Feb. 11, and Tinsley Ellis still do. Bill Sheffield played the first night of live music at the club in 1975 and still plays every Tuesday night with Donnie McCormick.
Incoming class: A resident bunch of bands plays Sundays through Thursdays, including a usual Wednesday night gig for walking blues encyclopedia Danny "Mudcat" Dudeck. The popular Breeze Kings hold down the Thursday slot. This Friday, it's Zydefunk; Saturday, you can catch the Fishmouth Fools. Johnny Knox hosts the Monday jam. Sheffield and McCormick will be joined this (Fat) Tuesday by Zydefunk and some special guests for a Mardi Gras celebration.
