THIS GYPSY-THEMED HOT SPOT has been open for about a year now. And the restaurant, bar scene and basement — dubbed Django's Belly — have continued to draw sexy barhoppers.
THE SCENE: The 20- to 30-something crowds are fairly diverse and laid-back. The overall vibe is more subdued, with more people sitting and head-nodding than dancing. But the switch in programming may draw more bodies onto the dance floor. Designed by the heads of the defunct Nomenclature Museum (now Whiskey Peach), Django's Belly moves from the brown brick of the restaurant upstairs toward something far more colorful and eclectic. The bar is a colorful mix of bright reds and quirky artwork. Designers also beat potential bathroom graffiti to the punch, with some of the strangest collages on the walls.
If you're hungry, check out the eclectic French-Mediterranean menu. It includes mussels, mahi mahi and baby back ribs. There are also late-night choices.
THE TUNES: Django has tried on multiple hats. Some nights of the week it's been downtempo, house and soul, other nights hip-hop, dancehall and soul, and on others house or Brit pop.
THE PRICE: Usually there isn't a cover charge, but during special events expect to drop $5-$10. Drinks are average price for downtown: not as steep as the swanky lounges a few blocks north, but no rock-bottom prices, either. A bottle of Heineken will set you back $4.
HOURS: Lunch: Monday-Saturday 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Dinner: Monday-Thursday 5:30-10:30 p.m., Friday-Saturday 5:30 p.m.-midnight. Belly: Friday-Saturday 10 p.m.-3 a.m.
