The name "Luby's" sounds vaguely dirty, but it's really just a neighborhood sports bar in Lawrenceville. The most risque thing there is bikini contests on Wednesdays in June and July. Nothing unique: minimalist design, 60 TVs, eight pool tables, a small dance floor and one long bar. The walls are filled with the usual array of sports memorabilia with a hockey edge. Food is mediocre and drinks are routine, patrons say, but Luby's treats its audience well.
PRICE: Usually $5 after 9 p.m. Fridays; $3 for guys and free for ladies after 9 p.m. Saturdays.
TUNES: The bar has karaoke Tuesdays, trivia Thursdays, pool tournaments Sundays and live acts or DJs Fridays and Saturdays. DJ Bright, playing a mix of top 40 dance remixes, failed to inspire the crowd to boogie, but the pool tables in the other room were swamped.
SCENE: The late-night crowd is full of young singles from the fast-growing Lawrenceville/Suwanee area who either don't feel like driving in town or are using the spot as a warm-up. (Gwinnett shuts bars down at 2 a.m.) The owners have also cultivated the restaurant employee crowd, which tips well, and off-duty cops, who enhance security.
