THIS SPOT IS STILL metro Atlanta's top breeding ground for folk-rockers -- even though founder Eddie Owen passed the torch to current owner Todd Van Sickle. Acts from Atlanta and abroad perform in the small showroom where the Indigo Girls and Shawn Mullins cut their teeth. The wait staff serves the audience from the bar, while others sip beer and cocktails across the hall over a game of pool or in the connecting patio bar.

PRICE: Show tickets range from $5 to $12, but getting into the patio bar area is free. Prices for food and drink are conventional.

TUNES: Folk, pop, rockabilly, bluegrass, country.

SCENE: Singer-songwriters and bands usually play Monday through Saturday. It's open on Sundays occasionally for a special show. Upcoming performances include Richard Bicknell, Kristen Hall and Reverend Jeff Mosier. Typically there's an earlier all-ages show on Friday and Saturday nights. Audiences tend to take their live music seriously, so those more concerned with partying throw down in the patio bar. Regulars vary from Agnes Scott students to 40-plus-year-old Decatur hospital employees. The popular Acoustic Open Mic show on Mondays gives six-stringers a shot at a cash prize. Every six months, the contest culminates in the $1,000 Open Mic Shootout, where all weekly winners are invited back for an acoustic battle royal.

• THE 411: 515-B North McDonough St., Decatur. 404-377-4976.
