It’s the event Trekkies everywhere have been waiting for: the 11th “Star Trek” movie hits theaters Thursday.

This time, Atlanta fans can boldly go and see the movie the way no one has before. Two AMC theaters, one in Kennesaw and the other in Morrow, will be showing the movie on new IMAX screens.

Special screenings of “Star Trek” are being held Wednesday, but those aren’t open to the public. Members of an Atlanta Star Trek club were among those invited to the advance screenings.

But don’t worry. There are plenty of chances to see the IMAX version of the film, but tickets are going fast. At Kennesaw’s Barrett Commons 24, Thursday’s 8 p.m. showing is nearly sold out, according to Hannah Gandy on the theater’s film crew. It will also be on the Imax screen at 11 p.m.

At Southlake 24 in Morrow, Trekkies have two chances to see the movie Thursday, at 7 and 10 p.m.

“Star Trek” will be shown on the IMAX screens at both theaters five times a day Friday through Sunday.

The movie, the first “Trek” installment since late 2002, is a semi-prequel, taking fans back to James T. Kirk’s graduation from Starfleet Academy and the early days of the USS Enterprise. J.J. Abrams, who fans may know from “Alias and “Lost,” directed the film. Chris Pine stars as Kirk.

“Star Trek” is rated PG-13.
